Title: Transmission Limbo...
Post by reondadomino on 05/10/11 at 16:49:10

I bought a 95 LS650 without knowing that the main shaft of the transmission was bad. So I have been on a quest to find a new one. I've been told I could weld the pulley sprocket to the main shaft instead of replacing the old main shaft, however, the oil seal of the main shaft was displaced in my efforts to remove the JB welded pulley sprocket, i.e. I ruined the oil seal with a chisel. Rookie mistake.

I purchased a tranny from an eBay vendor for an 86 LS650 b/c on any parts site that I researched, the 2 main shafts for the transmissions had the same exact part number. After 3 different sites confirming the parts numbers, it seemed a safe bet.

Recently, I tried to install the 86 main shaft using my 95 gears. No go. So I did some more research only to find that in 95, Suzuki changed the LS650 from 4 spd to 5 spd, seemingly, in the middle of the year! There are 2 models that year F and P. I have a P, which is the 5 spd model.

Dang it.

So now, I'm trying to find someone in the parts industry, etc. that can confirm a part # for a 95 LS650P main shaft.

24130-24B01 is not the right part # for my lower end. I've tried it. It seems that 24130-24B12 is the right part # and that the parts sites have just not modified their info.

Please help!

Thanks! :)

Do you want to sell the '86 transmission?

Yep. Interested? Or know someone who might be?

I found that same listing on eBay. Will a 2000 top end work with a 95 bottom end? Should be the same. The transmission has the same part #s but the crankcase part #s are different I believe.

I'm about ready to give up and just part out my Savage.  :(

As noted in the fleabay listing, the case is broke out.

So while the answer to your question is yes, you don't want to do it with that one.

If you buy that one, take what you want and I'll offer you $40 for what's left plus shipping.

what do you want for the '86 tranny?

research project   ;D

All I need is the main shaft. All the gears in my transmission have almost no visible wear! Which is surprising considering the condition of the main shaft's splines...

Here's the listing for the 86 I bought:

I'd like to get what I paid since I couldn't use any of it. Most of it is still wrapped up.

3 different parts sites just confirmed that unless I get the exact year and model of transmission for my Savage, it probably won't work. So, I guess I will be parting it out...  :-[

Don't go that far! You just need a new bottom end. You can find a number of those on Ebay. Or you can swap the jug you have onto the 86. Sure, it's a different fix than you were expecting but it's a fix none the less. And you'll still have your bike!

Will any year top end and bottom end work together?

Not sure the '86 tranny will go in the '95 case.

But pretty sure any year head and jug (top end) should go on any year crank and case (bottom end)
