Title: Savage dying while at cruising speed
Post by Marc on 05/10/11 at 06:05:21

I need some help.  My 2004 Savage (3500 miles) is dying while cruising at 60/70 mph.  It seems fine when I'm moving up/down the gears - it's just once I hit cruising speed for a few minutes - she dies.  I pull over to the side of the road - fiddle with the choke (sometimes, not always) and she starts right back up and I'm on my way.

Any suggestions?!?!

Thanks in advance for all the help!

+1 could be your petcock.
Also, ya might want to check the main jet to see if it's clogged

Not on prime.  What exactly is Prime for?

It bypasses the vacuum line. If it starts running better then you can replace your petcock, rebuild it or buy a raptor petcock to replace it.

don't forget the easy fix, replace the vac line, make sure the ends are tight, add clamps if not.

Do this first. It cured mine. I didn't even replace the hose--just put clamps on, but hose is cheap.  :)

Thanks for all the help!  The issue happened this morning so I was expecting the same thing to happen on my ride home  from work but it rode like a dream on the way home.

Here's the long version of what happened...

This morning it ran out of gas 30 seconds after leaving the house.  I pulled over and switched over to RES.  Ten minutes later I filled up and switched it back to ON.  Once I got up to cruising speed and maintained it for a minute - it bogged down and eventually died.  it did this a couple more times on the way to work.

The ride home she ran perfect!   Go figure.

So....did you try it on prime and it ran well? Or it just ran well after filling up? Makes a big diff. Former you have a petcock issue. Latter you may still have a petcock issue and it will probably happen again. Mine did some funny things off and on like that until I replaced it with a raptor petcock. No more problems.   8-)

I never put it on prime (I just found out today what "prime" was).  It ran like crap after the fill up.  It finally ran fine after sitting all day in the sun.

Mine used to run bad when it got cold...switched to the Raptor Petcock and it's been super duper since.

I've just had a similar (sort of) experience yesterday and my bike has been towed to the shop.  The situation was a bit different in that I wasn't at cruising speed.  I had a lot of backfiring (this has not happened before in the month I've owned this '09 S40) even as I was moving up the gears.  She was really chuggy, too, like I was lugging the engine, but then she'd pick up and go.

I got to 4th and she bogged down really bad but picked up again, then I went to 5th and she backfired louder and harder than I've ever had happen - I felt it all the way up my back.  And then she died.

On the plus side, my wheel bearings are great!  I rolled for a very long way before I had to paddle a bit to get around a corner and stop safely.  The bike would not start again at all.  Even after sitting for about 45 minutes waiting for the shop guy to give her a ride, she wouldn't start.  Cranked like a champ but that's as far as we got.

At least she didn't embarrass me and start up right away for him.  :)  Even with the differences, is this likely the same problem?

sounds like a dirty carb D
an ounce of seafoam in the carb every once in a while helps

Thanks, verslagen!  I'm going to start doing that as soon as she gets back home.  It was so weird and sudden.  I hope that's the solution and, if nothing else, it's not going to hurt a thing.

The FireLizard began doing that once and I cleaned the carb, but it continued, then I checked the petcock filter in the tank and that was clogged, cleaned that and it was fine. So check that as well.
