Title: Stiff petcock.
Post by arteacher on 05/09/11 at 15:39:33

I decided to run the bike to reserve to check the mileage, but when I went to put it on reserve it was really stiff. Through great good fortune I was able to coast into a gas station, right up to the pump.
How do I loosen it? Will WD40 damage anything? I was planning to WD40 it, work it loose, then put a drop or two of oil on it It will move, just not easily.
BTW 49 MPG combined. :)

WD 40 is one of the lubes for petcocks.

I use Krytox RFE (http://www.restockit.com/2oz-krytox-rfe-pfpe-o-ring-lubricant-(442-29710).html).

You're not gonna like the price, though!

I found an unopened tube of it on eBay for about 20 bucks a while back.[/quote]

Those petcocks are always hard to turn. I bought a brand new one last year, and after a few weeks it started moving tough almost the same way the old one was. I guess it's a design flaw.

I move mine from time to time to keep it from freezing up, but it's always been hard to turn.

Someone said you can take them apart......somehow, and clean and lube them. Mine used to turn hard, and heres what I did to make it now turn easier,.....nothing ! :o Figures !

not rocket science
unscrew the back to get at the diaphragm
unsnap the faceplate and the lever comes off
push the valve out from the diaphragm side, don't mess up the little spring, or prime/reserve won't work.

It seems that the lube gets washed away from the gas. When I bought my new one last year, it turned just beautifully easy. I thought :Dang, how nice that turns now! And then after a few weeks it is almost down to as stiff as the old one was. Well at least one thing is good about a new petcock: The diaphragm is new also, so I expect several years without trouble from a ruptured diaphragm and the resulting vacuum problems.

Basic routine I try to follow-fill fuel tank-set petcock to reserve-ride 15-20 miles-switch back to run-exercises the petcock-keeps crap from building up in the fuel tank-don't know if this really works, but, petcocks on my bikes all work nice and smooth. Don,t forget to set back to run (you will only forget once)
