Title: Too much oil?
Post by groupus on 05/08/11 at 12:07:01

so my bike has been leaking oil like a Harley recently; not a lot but consistently and enough to leave dribbles on the ground. I though it was due to the oil being over filled and maybe pushing out around the new gasket for the clutch side cover. i drained some oil out so that its slightly below the max line in the sight window and re-torqued the bolts on the cover. no change, but now it appears that the oil is coming out of the filler cap and just running all over the place. i cleaned up the threads and everything around the cap but it is still leaking.
Do i need to replace the cap or what?

ps. the bike is a 2003 with 18000 miles

there should be an o-ring under the cap.  replace it.

Simple, yet elegant solution. I'll order one, unless you know if i can just use a standard O-ring.

Buy nitril o-ring assortment at HF and use what fits.

I tried another approach: The O-Ring starts getting the beveled shape from being pressed into the seat in the crank case. What i did was< i carefully pulled the O-Ring off the screw plug, cleaned it and put it back on the opposite way. Works like a new one. No more leaking.

I have gone 7,000+ miles with no filler o-ring and no leaks. I will try to do the speedometer fix, seat lift, lube speedo cable, and buy that o-ring as well as the speed cable o-ring this week if I get time.  :)
