Title: 2007 motor in an'86 frame??
Post by daveruhlig on 05/06/11 at 08:22:39

Hello all-
I'm new to posting here, but have been around the site reading for a few months. The wealth of information here is impressive to say the least!

Here's my situation:

I have the opportunity to buy an '86 savage for a few hunderd bucks. It runs currently, bu the motor is pretty worn and certainly not what I would call dependent. I also met a guy locally that salvaged an '07 and is parting it out. The motor has less than 1500 miles on it so I'm considering doing a swap if it's possible.

So my question is... Is this a resonably easy swap? i.e. does everything line up so i won't have to do frame mods? I was planning on getting the motor, carb, and cdi from the '07 - do I need anything else?

Thanks!

-Dave

I do believe that as long as you use the proper wiring harness and CDI the swap will be straight forward.

Tell him the wiring harness and electronics has to come with the engine.

Is that because of the ignition parts on the stator side?

There are a few things which have different connectors.
CDI is the biggest, front brake switch, turn signals, kickstand, if fact all connectors may or may not be the same.

If he'll throw in everything for a 200 or 3 more, get it.  save you a lot of hassle and you'll be able to pick the best of the lot and sell the rest.

true you can use the flywheel off of the 87 on the 07 and not change anything but the motor.

That's what I thought. I was thinking about just the "Hardware" You change that flywheel and everything else should just work fine. That's one connector and then the one coming out of the clutch cover for the neutral indicator, and that should be it.

Thanks guys! I'll be sure to get the wiring harness as well and if I'm doing that I might as well get all of the new switchs and electrical components.
