Title: Not starting! Need help asap
Post by papi_ocho on 05/04/11 at 14:06:52

Just got this beast back from the clutches of my EX-wife

She rode it about a month ago. Before than who knows.

I got it back
Changed the oil and filter
Spark plug
Drained and filled gas
Cleaned the float bowl.
Charged the battery.

Went for a start and nada.

Turns over, sparks up, runs for about a second and dies!

Scratch head and repeat..

Need to get this thing running and state inspected (texas) by um ASAP..

HISTORY:
2006 with 1500 miles
Discoloration in the bowls, float.

Check vacuum line from carb to petcock, turn petcock to prime to start.
Pull 'choke' out. 8-)

"face of concern"

As your sitting on the bike petcock on the left.

There's a vacuum fitting on the petcock looks like there has never been a hose on it.

On the carb it's self
Hose on the left side of the carb runs up toward the tank. I pulled it. Doesnt feel attached. Hose on the right side of the carb runs around the carb doesn't look like it's ever been attached to anything.

Does anyone have a pic of the lines named and ran?

Can remove the tank until tomorrow

Get an old burger joint style catchup bottle and fill it with seafoam.  Hook it up to the fuel line feeding the carb, give it a light squeeze, and see if it will fire up.  Run it a bit till about 1/3 to 1/2 of the bottle is gone.  Now your carb is coated and filled with pure seafoam.  Let it sit overnight.  Closest thing to a full rebuild.

I so don't want to..

Will I be able to drop and clean the carb without removing the tank?
i dropped just the float bowl yesterday but I had the tank off.

What area should I pay special attention to while I have it apart?

since yesterday I had the tank off ( no gas) how do I stop the fuel from running while I have the carb apart and the tank still attached?

Yes if you can build a ship in a bottle.

I can do that too.

The inside   ;D  All the little ports and passages, they gum up.

Stock petcock has an auto off, if it still leaks, shove a 1/4" pin in there. (pull the hose off the carb leave it attached to the tank)

Lmfao.. Yes I can build a boat in a bottle!
Since you put it that way. I'm gonna take the tank off.

And auto off in the petcock? Test that out tomorrow.

In the 2 hours I've been away, I've the engine on the ground.
Somewhere in there, it included pulling the tank and the carb.

Auto off, that's what the vac line is for, when the engine is running the gas is flowing.

& when the engine aint runnin,, thers no vacuum to move the diaphragm & allow fuel to flow, thats why the Prime position is used, to let gas get to the carb, even when the engine isnt running.

Kicking myself in the butt for not cleaning the rest of the carb on tuesday when I had the tank off..

The main jet was dirty..
The pilot jet was clogged, no light at all coming thru it.
The needle had a ring around it where the needle enters the lower carb, matching ring on the carb its self.
>:( upset that I didn't do it while I had it out. But it's clean and running. passed state inspection. Hopefully tomorrow register it. And the rest is history.

Thanks for all your help and humor.

Yes, and yes.  Done it many times.  Also with gas in the same bottle to run without having to install the tank.  (Makes syncing carbs easier...)
