Title: Bobby Onelung - As Done as I'll do it, Maybe?
Post by BC-Savage on 05/01/11 at 23:08:37

Bobby Onelung  - 1986 Savage.
Came with big backrest, ape hangers, broken parts, covered in oil, severe oil leak. Very rough, very dirty, very rusty.
I replaced the bars, fwd and rear signals, tail light, brake light, custom paint including controls and risers. I changed the clutch, fixed the cam chain tensioner, cleaned it several times, fixed the nasty oil leak (std plug/cap), & serviced the steer tube bearings. I removed the passenger pillion, relocated the reg/rect, and the chrome eyebrows which hold the backrest. Filled countless holes in the fenders, and then gave it a backyard spray bomb job, which in the end turned out very well. Finally I carved and ground the seat out the typical potatochip shape, made a pattern and sewed up a new cover, which far exceeded my expectations. Looks good and is surprisingly comfortable.

Really a great job.  I like the simplicity.  Makes my old 86 look kinda sick.

Great job!!! What tires you got there??

I like it to, clean and tasteful.

Those tires are Bridgestone spitfires, I got a set about 11k miles ago, still have plenty of tread left to.  They have a dual compound, hard tread and softer edges.

If you look careful, you can find this in a non-signal capable unit too. Turns out I accidentaly bid on one of the very few which does not have signal capibilities.

I think you can convert them with a few diodes, but haven't tried that yet.

And, if there's enough time, contact the seller, says oops, please cancel my bid.

I've only done it once though, seller is an a--hole.  I think I'm banned from buying from him.  even with my 100% rating.

That is super awesome. I love the entire look of the bike and the special attention to the minor details with the paint. I love the seat, it looks near-stock but way more comfortable! Where are the rest of the wires that were under the second seat?

I can't wait to get some cash at the end of the year and get my bike painted.

Those signals usually list from $19.95-49.95 depending on how big a mark-up the shop has.

Hiding the rear fender wires is easy, if you add a rack like that install a "loop" fitting like for a car wiring bundle, on the bolt before the nut goes on. Drill/grommet a hole in the front edge of the fender to run them through also.

Nice job, clean and simple almost always looks good.

Incredibly clean! I hope I can get my abused 01 looking that clean, assuming I can get it running

Hey HD;
You are right on target. the signals were pretty cheap, much cheaper than the ones like that I bought about 4 yrs before for a Yamaha project.
I went with a rack rather than reshaping the fender. It all came to place when the dealer down the road had one and one only and it was a perfect fit. Carma?
As for the wiring, I used a marine grade 6 conductor wire to keep it clean. I did a combo of the fastener mounted DG's (Wire loop holds) and bonded ZAP bases. I used a grommet to protect the wire loom as it passes through the fender.
I Used a product called Plexus (which is a Methacrylate based Adhesive) to fill the holes, and Bond the Zap bases. There was a lot of holes to fill (fwd and rear fenders), not only from all the stock lights and backrest trim, but the original owner drilled holes to mount many custom lights.
I relocated the Regulator/Rectifier to the tool box location. Speaking of which for those of you who have done that, did you need to create any ventilation in that space to help cool the Rectifier/Regulator?
I really wanted to lose the stock air filter too and relocate a smaller battery somewhere, but at some point I need to focus on my next project and start enjoying this fun little bike I've named Bobby Onelung.
