Post by wesley on 04/29/11 at 18:08:43

Sorry if this might be an obvious question this is my first bike and not a mechanic person. is the engine suppose to look like this? or do i have an oil leak..if so,

by looking at this pic can anyone tell me (maybe from past experiences)where maybe the leak is or where i should start checking.

if you look under the header you will see some oil.

Thanks.

Front cylinder head nut is either loose or leaking from the stud. The leak is related to the head gasket. A lot of bikes have that issue, including my '06. I took off the nut, cleaned the area and put the nut back on with thread sealant. Problem gone.

retorq the head bolts, it doesn't look too bad.

also, put a new o-ring under the oil cap.

First, your bike has had the head cover taken off by a previous owner.

Second, you have had the standard rubber plug leak (who knows, mebbe you got it again fresh or mebbe he simply didn't clean it up well from fixing it the last time).

In short, you gotta clean it up really really well and then watch it for a year to see what it does.

You may be fine ....

or

.....  you may need to go back into the head cover again.

You don't know until you start from a totally clean motor and see what develops over time.

In either case it is a minor annoyance, not a major problem.   Folks have successfully lived with the rubber plug leak for years and simply done nothing but wash the bike occasionally.

You are not going to hurt anything by cleaning it up really really good right now then seeing what develops over time.

If you do need to go back in there, this is what you are signing up for ...
