Title: the oil window
Post by carlostheobscure on 04/28/11 at 12:08:52

i had an epiphany - one 2x4 scrap and a 1x2 scrap make a block that i can put the kickstand on to level the bike - can than provide a little counterweight with one hand against said block while i look at the sight bubble on the level.  Works perfectly well for me - of course, ive already buggered up both my rear turn signals by dropping it in the driveway on other occassions so there's little risk involved...

A standard English house brick levels the bike just enough that the oil level should be dead center of the sight-window  ;)

Its also useful when I park up, as I can get closer to a left hand wall in a confined space, without making the bike unstable.

Once you have the oil level where you like it, look at it again w/o the block.  Can't see it, find a block that put the level on the bottom line.

Aha, less risk of tipping.

Also, most are filling to the top line now.

Anytime the bike is near level, and I'm standing on my head trying to see oil level, there is risk involved,....trust me !

Why not just leave it on the side stand, and make sure you see some oil somewhere in the glass. Mine is midway tween the lines while on the side stand, and has been for 3,000 miles, mainly for safety, and because the previous said thats the way he thought it was supposed to be. And I have never seen a drop of oil anywhere,......except thru the window ;D
So untill I find some ill effect from it, it will stay that way.

Yea, should be at the minimum line on its side stand, that works well.

Yeah the oil window thing is a bit of pain.  In the end, I bought a little mechanic's mirror on a telescoping arm.  Then I just sit on the bike and guide the little mirror down to take a look.

I have no balance, I am sure if I tried to hold the bike up and peek in the window directly, I would soon be wearing my S40 as a hat.
