Title: Four air gauges, four readings
Post by MotoBuddha on 04/26/11 at 06:58:52

I mounted a new tire at my buddy's shop and inflated it to an arbitrary 40 pounds --  because that was the first easy-to-remember number I hit. The idea was to let it sit a few days to see whether it leaked.

When I measured it at home, my big fancy gauge read 36 lbs. Then 33 lbs. Then 30 lbs. Oh, that wasn't good. It's the type of gauge that holds the reading until you push the release button. But the needle was leaking down before I'd push the button, so something was wrong with the gauge.

I dug out three old stick-style gauges. Each of those shot off the scale. I saw one of them only went up to 25 lbs. Well, that's sort of useless.

I let air out of the tire and measured again. I got 35 lbs. and 33 lbs. The big gauge read 24 lbs. Guess I need to get something more accurate, like a digital gauge, or at least a stick gauge that hasn't been rattling around for a couple of decades.

I'm not critical w/ pressures, but I have a gauge for each range,.........

0-20 (ATV)

0-50 (Car, truck & Bike)

0-100 (RV MH)

I never liked digital

Just because it's digital doesn't mean it's accurate. Air pressure gauges need to be calibrated every so often, but it is probably cheaper to buy a new one. I bought a large dial type for $30, and they checked it for me for free last year. It was still accurate.

Ah, but who calibrates the calibrators? And who calibrates them?   ;)

That reminds me of another question. Machines have become more and more precise, right? But how do they make a machine more precise than the machines that are making it?

"Because I used a Craftsman model 1019 Laboratory Edition Signature Series torque wrench. The kind used by Caltech high energy physicists. And NASA engineers."

and

"Because a split second before the torque wrench was applied to the faucet handle, it had been calibrated by top members of the state AND federal Department of Weights and Measures... to be dead on balls accurate! "
