looking to find out how to increase the idle speed just a touch for our current cold weather riding. can anyone tell me how i would go about doing that? (on my suzuki ATV's it is as simple as turning an adjustment screw and hoping the S40 has a similar adjusting screw.)

also, is there an adjustment screw to take a little of the slack out of the throttle cable? again, just a minor adjustment necessary but not sure where to start looking for that.

A few of things that will save you a lot of time here. 1) play with the search function. For example, search for "idle adjustment" in the tech section, which is indexed. When you search specify all posts, or you only get recent posts. 2) spend a few bucks and get the owner's manual, or download it from the tech section. It covers all adjustments and regular maintenance items. 3) If you plan to do some wrenchin, get the Clymer manual. I have the Clymer and the Suzuki service manual and the service manual assumes you know a lot about mechanics, while the Clymers is more like a guide for dummies and has much better pictures.

Look at the carb. Twist throttle, see the part tht swings? Look at where it stops , see the Big Fat Screw? Its easy enough to adjust by finger tip. I adjust mine during about every ride, or it idles too low when its cold & then too high when its warmed up..

Note where the cable attaches TO that part,, loosen the setscrew & pull slack outta the cable. Thats gonna change how it feels as you accelerate out of a corner. When the power comes on in will be more precise & easily conrolled.. Youll like that.

becareful with those adjustments, you need a little slack in the line. there's a cable adjustment in the cable up near the twist grip.

idle speed is what you're looking for

thanks MUCH for the labeled photo. thanks as well to others that provided the detailed description. the combination of the two was exactly what i needed. got things adjusted and spent some time on the bike this afternoon. :)

i will order myself a Clymer's manual. i like pictures! ... as simple as possible an explanation ... and show me exactly what to look for!

i could not find the cable adjust up near the grip either. just left it as it was for the moment. (was happy just to make the adjust to the idle speed for today.)

I think its under that black rubber thing on the cable up by the grip.

The cable comes out of the throttle control with a metal elbow.
At the end of that elbow is an adjustment nut.
Mine is naked.

followed the instructions above and found the adjustment today for the throttle cable and made that minor adjustment. we spent some time out on the bike today and everything is working as it should. :)

... no i guess there wasn't ... but i like the feeling that i don't have to take this bike to the shop for every little thing.

my own bike is fuel injected and has lots of plastic making it pretty but which also cover all the guts of the machine. i am always afraid to break something on it taking off the cowlings etc. the S40 is so open and easy to access ... it is a very nice change.
