Title: Motorcycle Lift ?
Post by Routy on 04/21/11 at 06:33:11

Neighbor was throwing out a recliner w/ a good working power lift built in. I turned it over, and was impressed w/ the heavy duty steel frame that houses this mechanism. And right away I'm thinking "powerlift" of some kind,.....yeah,.....motorcycle lift !
Anyone got any plans for such a thing,....or do I have to figure this from scratch ?  :o ;D

Sounds like an original Rube Goldberg concept. Youll need to figure it out. Ive had a hospital bed a guy gave me. All I wanted was the chrome handrails & the motors & mechanisms that raised & lowered it.. planning on windows in the hothouse,, being able to open & close them with the push of a button.
A  chair mechanism in a power lift chair Has to be stout. The chair itself isnt light & the kind of people who need  power lift chair are often flippin HUGE, so you should be able to build a bike lift, as long as you dont go tossing some 800 pound bike on it.
Might wanna look up the chair manufacturers weight limits,

POst some pics & Ill be happy to see if I can help any at all.

does the chair lift straight up?
or rotate to drop the occupant at a height?

If it's straight, simple, throw a piece of plywood on top and you're done.

If it rotates, then most likely there are 2 pairs of struts to control the motion.  Make them parallel and equal in length and you're done.

strip the chair off, give us a few pictures and we can suggest.

Would be neat....but so is a piece if 2x12 and a length of pipe and 2 eye bolts, instant 'lift'. And if you need the entire bike off the ground, you can add a scissor jack from the car!

NO! Ya Caint DO that! That would eliminate all the McGyverin,, what fun is there in that?? Doesnt matter if there 3 times the time & 2 times the $$$ involved,, gotta go with the engineering challenge, man,, Come ONN!

sheesh,, ya Ol stick in the mud,,

JOG, that all sounds great and dandy if we were still in the winter project mode...but it's officially spring, which means it's time to RIDE!!!

:D :D :D

25 degree farenheit tonight...who says its Spring. :D

As often noted, this thread is worthless without pictures. :D :D :D :D

Hey! Ive got the wrong attitude,, I forgot about the calendar! Those parts can be stashed till later,, ride that thing,,

I'm not sure this project is going anywhere.
Like said, the geometry would have to be changed a little so it would lift straight up.
But the AC cord is missing, (plugs in) they said they would find it, but so far haven't. If not I'll trial and error the ac side, try to get it running.
I know this chair from '07 new,....it lifted a 350 lber (up yonder now) w/ ease, but it is very slow. I'd like to use it for something if I can get it going.
The pic ?...........to keep in practice !

I rode yesterday,....I'll fish today.

Well it's a good start.  When you can, give us a pic with it up.

You probably remember this...

Yep, I remember that,.....nice, except I was thinking more compact.
Actually it wouldn't be hard to build the geometry from scratch. I mite just pull the power actuator assy from this, and start a new.

I hear ya, just an example of what we need to work towards.

I have had a regular motorcycle lift for some time,When I made the 2x10 I started using it all the time.Only takes about 10 seconds and your bike is in the air.

In the air ? Can you stand under it, and reach "up" for the drain plug ?? ;D

All the time ? Why are you working on your bike "all the time?" ;D

Take the manufacturer's max weight spec with a grain of salt. We have purchased (at great expense) several pieces of equipment for handicapped people, as my wife has MS. All have been rated to 350 pounds safe load (my wife weighs 300 - I had to look that she wasn't watching me type this) and all save the $13000 electric wheelchair, have failed.

I lift the back wheel and ride it. ;D

They can't find the AC cord.
There is a plug, same as a microphone on a CB radio, that the AC cord must have plugged into. But it has 5 pins in it, and I only need 3, and this AC stuff is too hot to be using T&E !
The motor runs on 27 volts AC, so I'm forced to go thru the black box.

Ya know what ?? I think I'll haul this mechanism right to the scrap yard before it trys to hurt me ! I keep thinking about the screw driver that I melted the last time I T&E this AC stuff !  :o

I once welded a screw driver to the ground of a power socket on one of my wife's scooters- 24v at80 amps- BIG sparks  ;D

In the USAF I had an instructor who told us he had seen a guy bypass the interlock on a High Voltage drawer on a piece of equipment & then turn his back to it & BEND OVER TO GET A TOOL, WHILE HE HAd A BIg SCREWDRIVEr IN HIS BACK POCKET. hE TOLD US IT SHOT AN ARC OUT ( oops,, Caplox, sorry) & hit that screwdriver, melting the handle in his pocket.. IDK if that was true, bt it sure made us all respect the hekk outta that high voltage.

Right on, I can hurt myself bad enough w/ 12 volts (thats why I don't wear a ring anymore) I don't really need 120 v to get hurt !
But I really did want to see this thing work, especially since it took me over an hour to get it out of that dam chair !

look on Ebay, I bet you can find a new power cord easy enuf.  I certainly don't wanna see you get hurt messing with it, but you gotta try something!  You can't just scrap it!   ;)

Id cut the cord & play with the wires, individually. You need a Volt Ohm Meter, Harbor Freight, $3.00.
