Title: Is there a spark plug replacement schedule?
Post by Joe F on 04/18/11 at 19:35:03

I've got 13,000 on the original spark plug on my 2007.  Do they need regular replacement or do I drive with the same one until I have some kind of problem?

Don't have an owner's manual.

Hmm. google...  hmmm... bootleg copy... Looks like I'm supposed to have replaced the brake fluid also and the brake lines are due for replacement on my 2007 also.  ugh...

Schedule? Every third Tuesday after the first full moon after the autumnal equinox, between the hours of 9:30 AM and 8:45 PM, except in leap years or years ending in 3 or 7, in which case it's the second Wednesday, between 2:15 AM and 8:05 AM. And don't forget to rub a monkey's butt three times in a counterclockwise circle while humming an F#. And make sure the bike is aligned with true north.

Actually, in my opinion, you SHOULD replace the brake fluid in your car. So by your logic... yeah, replace it in your bike too!

I've had bikes that were over 20 years old and over 30000 miles and cars over 10 years old and over 100000 miles and never replaced the brake fluid with out a problem.Space I bet you never had a motorcycle over 20 years.

I spent many hours resurrecting the brakes on a mans old truck. His 87 Dodge had the original brake fluid in it. It was Nasty, the rear brake cylinders were so rusted up that I couldnt even crush the pistons in without a Big Vise*** (Edit below). The fluid was brown & I used over a quart to get it back to a reasonable color. Bills "It dont need maintenance" is comforting if you dont want to do the work, but if you want to keep somethng, you gotta maintain it.
If the car has antilock brakes, you cant just go opening bleeders & pokin on the brake pedal. Get the manual & follow it or pay someone to cycle the brake fluid.

Edit.. They were so pitted there was simply no chance they would hone out. Brake fluid atracts water & will create some rusted up crap if its not replaced once in a while.

You are incorrect. I have a 1981 Kawasaki KZ440 running just fine with 16k miles on it. However, following what the suzuki engineers say to do is to replace it every two years. Given that brake fluid is really cheap and easy to replace (same as spark plugs), I'll take the "wive's tale" approach and have peace of mind that my motorcycle will stop correctly.

Bill, I'm beginning to think you just like trolling on this site just to piss people off with your wild, baseless claims of unnecessary maintenance. Whatever magical rituals you do to your bike, keep them to yourself. The rest of us will stick to proven good maintenance.

does Klotz make brake fluid??

I don't think so,Maybe you can find some diesel brake fluid.

Post by verslagen1 on 04/19/11 at 16:55:25

I heard you can use ATF.

ATF is light weight dino oil with red color and an anti-oxidant package in it.

Brake fluid is glycol and alcohol and some other goodies to make it last longer.

I don't think the two interchange all that well .......

ATF has a lower boiling point, I guess.

What ever Suzuki puts in is good and lasts a long time.

I thought the critical thing about brake fluid is that it's hydrophobic (won't absorb water), which would rust the brake system.

(We've kind of wandered off from the original topic, haven't we.)  ::)

I actually did substitute some power steering fluid (I think, maybe trctor hydraulic fluid) for brake fluid in a 4 wheeler that did not work.  It swelled up the seals and stopped well right up until it went up in flames.
And no, the brakes did not start the fire.
