Title: Not starting.
Post by KristenAnn on 04/18/11 at 18:28:01

We just got a 97 savage that was sitting for 3 years. We changed out the old gas, put in new spark plug. We havegood flow of gas and good compression. She sounds like she wants to start but just doesnt turn over. We are think that the carb needs a rebuild. Any suggestions anyone?  Posted this in the wrong topic earlier.

I thought I moved it for you.  must've pushed the wrong button.  at least I didn't delete it by accident.   ;D

Moderators can move posts to the right section, so in the future you notice something just let us know.

check the spark, pull the plug, put it against the head and turn it over, should get a good blue spark.

then check the air filter.

then you might take a look up the ol' bung hole for any obstruction.

Yup,.. definite... go though the carb, clean the jets, passages, and slide... try to run a thin wire through them if you can... I use guitar strings...

You are indicating that when you hit the starter button, you hear the engine cranking but it doesn't fire ??? I think of the engine cranking as turning over - but not necessaruily firing.
(2) We always ask if the battery is new, or are you jumping it?
(3)   Did you check the new spark plug and look to see if it was firing when you hit the starter button?  I only mention these items as everyone else is quite properly focused on the fuel supply, so I thought I'd mention the spark side.  Good luck and keep us posted. :-[

These thigs are pretty finicky about the battery power. Theyll spin the motor, but wont fire up if the battery is weak.
