Title: knotty pine
Post by mick on 04/14/11 at 19:00:04

I built this box 4 years ago but did not finish sanding ,staining, and polishing. So I finished it off over the past few weeks,it will be a gift for ny Daughter to use as a jewelry box,all I need now is some black velvet to line the draws. Now I have to think of something for my other daughter.

Pretty nice!  Are the drawer pulls different wood, or did you just stain them darker?

Actually the draw pulls in the plan called for ebony, so I used the liquid kind ,black rustolium on pine.

Mick you never cease to
amaze me. That is a very
nice looking and well made
jewelry box. I like the darker
wooden handles.
Possibly make your other
daughter a nice picture frame.
Oh and a pic of you on your Ninja
or else in the Miata would be a
nice added bonus.. Hugs.. kim :)

Nice, and much cheaper than ebony I'm sure.
You can do some nice stuff with pine, just using different stains.

Very nice work Mick. I do small woodworking projects myself. My Grandfather taught me some tricks, one of which is how to make a nice dark stain. In a large pickle jar soak ripe walnuts, not shucked, in alcohol. It takes a while (like months) but eventually the alcohol turns black. Decant some off and let the alcohol evaporate till it looks like ink, then apply it and wipe like a regular store bought stain. The advantages are that it penetrates very well, and dries very quickly.
There is nothing like a gift that you have made yourself. It's like giving a piece of you.

what kind of alcohol?  (100 proof vodka) ? ripe walnuts ? how do I know they are ripe if I don't take the shell off ?
Because I am going to make some and I want to get it right, teach.
Thanks for the valuable tip,I don't mind buying it ,but the thought of my very own stain. Sounds good.

Ripe walnuts are usually ground fall that has started to turn or has completely turned black. They are in effect rotten and no good to eat anymore. The alcohol is methanol (sorry, no vodka).

in-stead of missing it,keep doing it.
My shop is a mess right now because I shoved everything to the end to make room for my bikes.
Alas no more bikes,so I shall reorganize and set it up as a wood shop again,I think I can do quite a bit with one good hand.
