Title: need help  engine quits while riding
Post by judgemos on 04/09/11 at 18:25:57

So i bought a 2009 two weeks ago.  Ran fine and then i rode home from work for lunch and went to ride back and after a quarter mile the engine quit, not fun at 65mph.  Finally got it started and it happened again.  I am new to motorcycles and i have no clue where to even start

'09 seems pretty new to have things like the vac line to the petcock going nutty - when you restarted it just ran fine from then on and you had plenty of fuel?

How to check your petcock,... (http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1251932429/1)

... also check that your tank vent is working...

and you understand the 3 settings on the petcock - res-on-pri right?

so you had just filled it up like a few minutes before it quit?

is it still doing it?

yes I understand the settings.
i filled it up on the way home.
yup it still quits after about a quarter mile.
i will have to try test the petcock later after my kid goes to sleep.

or just flip it to pri and go for a ride - don't leave it there

seems too new for the petcock - but maybe not for vac line

There is a little screw on the bottom of the carb bowl. If you unscrew it you can drain the gas out of the carb into a beer can or something simular to check for water in the carb. It is a good thing to do as regular maintance every few months to drain any crud out of the carb bowl. If you have left the bike out in the rain or outside for a few weeks with heavy dew there might be some water that has worked into the tank. and draining the carb is the easiest way to check. When you are riding check to see where your left foot is sitting. The kick stand has a cutoff switch and if you hit the kickstand with your foot the bike will shut off or stumble (been there and done it!!) Since it is shutting off after only a 1/4 mile I would think that it is the petc0ck or something fuel related.

& my 05 had the most annoying habit of just shutting off & would not even crank over...

If you got it from a dealer, it should be under warranty..let them figure it out.

And now to the embarrassing question (since I did it once with my car)is there any possibilty you grabbed a deisel  nozzle rather than the more appropriate gas nozzle when you fueled up??

If the gas dealer just got a delivery before you went in, they could have stirred up enough sediment to partially block fuel at the petcock inside the tank..if you are handy, drain out the fuel, unscrew the petcock and check the mesh for sediment (try everything else first as this is a PIA)>

Best of luck, we all want you to have smooth sailing.. ;)

That 1/4 mile and the fact that it happens at the same time is just what happens when I leave my raptor petcock on off.   ;D

Especially if it runs fine for that distance, then sputters, coughs, etc.

What octane of fuel did you put in?  My 05 does the same thing if I put 87 in it.  It just blatently won't run on it because of the 10% ethenol.  I recommend 91 octane.

TheSnakeLady- interesting observation.....might be a good topic for a poll.  I have always used 87 but then they have increased ethy-not that a great aroma either. ;)

If you have a Savage-S-40 that won't run on 87 octane, you have a serious problem. But all IMO.

I've run my '02 on stale 2 stroke fuel a few times just to use it up. Dumped 1/2 a gallon in with 1 gallon of 87 octane. Can't say the bike liked it but it burned it smelling like a out of tune chainsaw. Maybe I'll try diesel next time. Try running the bike with the petc0ck in prime, if that's not it check the gas cap, it has a vent in it somewhere that can get plugged up and cause a vapor lock.

thank you for your ideas.  I went through and pulled the petcock out checked for blockage and replaced it.  Going to order a raptor one just to make life easier.  Pulled the carb off, checked the float bowl and everything looked good.  Went for a ride after everything was back together and it ran fine. So i think the bike just wanted some attention.
Thanks again

I just put a Raptor petc0ck on my '02. It took me longer to find a screw in my junk box for the carb vacumn line than it did to swap the petc0ck out.
