Title: Rear brake light switch adjustment
Post by Fujisawa Rob on 04/06/11 at 06:57:49

My brake pedal is adjusted to the spec height and freeplay. I'd like my brake light to turn on sooner though. I can adjust the switch cable, but I run out of thread on the switch before it's where I want it. Can I swap the small spring for a shorter/stiffer one? I imagine after 24 years it's stretched a bit!

Is the the right fix, or is there something else wrong perhaps?

You should have plenty of threads on the adjuster unless someone already replaced the spring with one that is not correct size.

It should be adjusted so that you can tap the brakes and light the brake light without applying the brakes (remember turn on the IGN when checking..... trust me).  And, it's actually easy to do.

maybe a touch of W-D on the switch would help ?

That's my goal. I wanna say the spring is about 1" long but I'll check.

The switch doesn't appear to be sticking.

The spring is there only to give stretch when the switch hits it's end of travel.  The switch travel is less than the brake travel.....

Sorry, should have said that in my earlier post.

I replaced the spring with a slightly shorter one (about 1/4" or so). It's has about the same stiffness as the stock one, which I kept just in case. I now have enough threads to adjust the switch either way. The brake light comes in just a tad past the 'free play' of the pedal, right where I wanted it.
