Title: Fork Braces
Post by Smokestack on 04/04/11 at 17:27:26

So, I've done some research on the TKat and Super Brace, but I was wondering about some of the others.  In particular, the various curved ones that bolt into the fender mounts.  Seems like they wouldn't do much in the way of "bracing", but I do like the way they fill those holes and I just can't bring myself to run the fender on a Ratbob. I suppose I could spin down the forks to remove the fender mounts entirely, but I may well change my mind about the fender sometime down the road, so....

Anyone have any experience with 'em?  Do they do the job, or are they just for looks?

Some people cut the fender to the shape of the inner brace-like part. Then some do a bit of artful swiss cheesing to it.

That's actually kinda what I was thinkin'.  Just wondering if it helps to stiffen the front end up like a TKat or some such....

I got one in '05 or so.  Better tracking.  To be test I would have to remove to see if I notice it being sloppier.  Don't wanna.

I'm a newbie to the Savage world but understand that the brace is supposed to bet one of the better upgrades for the bike based on bang for the buck.

...but... what exactly does it do? My assumption is improve highway driving.

Without the fork brace the only thing that keeps the wheel from wobbling side to side is the front axle, so it does, a bit. This causes a bit of instability cornering and that little "shiver" as you cross seams in the pavement, or trolly tracks. The brace ties the forks together in a way much stiffer than the axle alone.
