Title: most absurd bolt on bike
Post by carlostheobscure on 04/04/11 at 10:14:52

So there's a stock carriage bolt with a hole helpfully cut in for a small allen wrench which bolt holds the back tab down on the stock seat.  If you're lazy like me and wait almost three years (and yes, the bike has seen rain) to loosen that bolt for seat removasl recharging the battery becomes way more difficult than it should be.  That carriage bolt's still frozen (despite getting an industrial sized hand screwdriver on it and turning it one full turn - now truly fubared i imagine), but the battery is recharged, bike is running great and the first $1,999 someone waves in my face takes it all home....

yeah- that's high on the "replace list"

i switched it to a hex head a couple years ago, and replaced the other seat bolts with quick pins to make seat removal more doable with fewer tools

I googled "quick pins" but do not understand how you could make them work. Enlighten me please?

Some you just pull on to remove, They have a spring loaded detent to hold them in place.

Some have a button to release the detent for removal.

I favor the bottom one.

drill out the holes big enough to push the quick pins through,  then all you gotta do is remove that bolt at the rear tab, pull the pins, and bob's yer uncle!

I can get these (and other similar) for a couple bucks each...

shown against the seat bracket, drill it out with a 1/4" drill and you're good to go.

those look easier to pull out than mine - i have the kind with the spring loaded bead and the wire ring - like  your top pic above.

they work great, but sometimes a little tuff to remove - still way easier than taking out the bolts

Here is a link to the seat bolt replacement with pins mod:

I have not had any issues with the seat pan or the brackets.  I do put a drop of oil on the balls when I get ready to put them back in.  I have never had any trouble with them.

This not really the bolt carlos was asking about, but it is close.

Verslagen, you have some broken threads there, at least all I got was red x's on some of your pictures.
