Title: OEM IRC tire life
Post by JohnBoy on 04/02/11 at 07:32:12

I just swapped the IRC tires for Metzeler ME880's. It has been a while since I owned a bike this light, and I was expecting the tire life to rival the Dunlops on my Goldwing and Voyagers. These do appear to be the original tires installed in 2004 and the clock says 12500miles. Granted the rear is a slick, and I have been skating around turns like a dirt track racer for six months; but 12500 miles on a rear skin was quite a surprise.
The side walls on the front were cracked badly after that much time in the AZ sun but it still held air!
I am looking forward to similar wear out of the Metzlers.

At 12,500, you got twice the miles as most do.
I'm right at 6,000 and the rear should be changed, even tho I mite squeeze another 1.5 K out of it. But I'm not hi sp on any freeways either.

At 7000 miles my stock rear tire was a slick. I have since put about 14000miles on a Metzler and still have plenty of tread life left.

I got 7200 out of my rear tire, 8500 out of my front. The IRC tires just don't last long. The stock front brake pads are lucky to see 2500 miles if that. Just upgrade as needed and enjoy the ride.

I got 7k on my rear, i think the cords gave it some extra traction......

have 11k on bridgestone spitfires with plenty life left

most anything is an upgrade from stockers

Do you guys replace tires mostly due to wear, or dry rot?  I live in the city, and I doubt I'll run out of tire tread before my tires cracks get big enough that I'll want to replace them.

I replace my tires due to wear.

Like said, all the OEM are slick at 7,000 mi.
But taking the age factor into concideration, the OEC tires could be a better replacement choice for some,........ because if like me, I'm not real dedicated to pitching tires just because of age alone.....usless of course they had severe sidewall cracking also.

I had two IRC on the rear of my '06, both lasted about 3,000 miles. Then I got a Dunlop K555, and that lasted 4,500 miles. I got a K555 again now. My front brakes only last about 2,000 miles. I must be riding pretty hard.

If you had a car, I'd say your alignment is shot.

I replaced the rear at 12000 and I have 25000 on the front but I needed to replace it and have put it off.

Both!!!

Front had severe dry rot, and back  was a slick @ just under 6,000

Much better (notice how the rear is actually round, not flat)

My '06 has 13,400 miles on it and still has the OEM IRCs.  The rear definitely needs replacing.  The front still has plenty of tread but it's starting show weather checking really bad.

As it appears, we  have rear tire mileage varying from 3,000 to 13,400 miles on the same tire,.....w/ most going about 6,000.
So I have to be curious,.....how many of those that got 12 & 13K miles bought those bikes new.

Really informative pictures EJID.  Now I have something to compare my tires to.  I feel a lot better about the cracks I see in my tires (they're barely visible).

Count me in the "bought new" crowd.  I bought my '06 in August of '07 at a dealership with less than 1 mile on it.  It's only spent 1 night outside my garage since I've owned it.

Another data point:

The original rear tire (an IRC) on my Savage (see signature block) was down to the wear bars at 8700 miles.

The original front tire (another IRC) is still on there at 11,900 miles, but it's getting close to the wear bars.

I replaced the rear with another OEM IRC and I've got a new OEM IRC front tire waiting on my tire rack.

Why did I stick with the IRCs?  Well, even though I don't own a cage and my Savage is my daily rider, I still only average about 1400 miles a year on this bike.  I can get the IRCs cheap and, if I got a more expensive and higher mileage tire, the nicer tire would most likely age-out before I could wear it out.

Also, the IRC's performance is fine for me.
