Title: rear wheel bearing replacement
Post by JohnBoy on 03/31/11 at 21:18:12

I replaced the rear tire and decided to swap the bearings at the same time.
The big bearing that fits in the pulley housing was no problem.
The two smaller bearings in the wheel itself were a different story. Try as I would I could not drive them out from either side! I finally broke down and took the wheel and the replacement bearings to the shop. They explained that the wheel hub has a 'pocket' that the bearings fit into on either side.
"You can't drive them through from either side!"
The shop charged me nothing and suggested that I tip the tech.
Needless to say, the first round was on me :)

You are the first one who ever chose to mess with them -- and you really didn't have to, you just chose to do it because you thought it would be PMish to "replace them before they failed".

But none ever have, apparently they last jest about forever ....

Good to know though.

How do they come out, then?

Enquiring minds want to know!

You drive them out from the opposite side or use a gear puller.
