Title: Evap canister deleted?
Post by Fujisawa Rob on 03/31/11 at 18:10:23

Looks like the Previous Idiot ripped out the evap canister and left the vacuum lines dangling. I should be able to plug the vacuum line to the carb, right? As far as the tank, can I put a small filter on that line as a breather, and does it need a check valve of some sort? Thanks!

I took all the line past the carb off and stuck the line forward so I see if it's leaking.  Of course it's directly over the header.   :o

take the line and stick it up the frame like the other vent tubes.

and cap the carb.

Justin, are you a drinking some of that special April Fools brew of yours again?

T'ain't no fun to be teasing the newbies -- its too easy.

Be all nice to them instead, that way they can grow up to be good little oil warriors once they get into the swing of things.

Of course! This Idiot is still learning. These are quite different from car engines.

I'll cap the barb at the carb, then just leave the hose from the tank open to the atmosphere, or put a filter on it?

You can leave it open or put a little fuel filter on it.

or you could get the raptor petcock and eliminate the need for a vac line at all.

Is the vent line from the tank involved with the petcock? I thought it was just to allow for the expansion of fuel vapor that gets trapped in the charcoal canister to be burned later, like on a car.

Glad you mentioned it though. Is the vacuum petcock subject to problems?

I'm curious if the bike will run any differently with the vacuum leak fixed.

49 State bikes vent the gas cap.  Californians vent the gasoline to the canister to the carb.  To be legal in California you have to use the canister (BWAHAHAHAHA!!)
Cap the carb, ignore the tank vent.

"Male" implies "Idiot"

Such as a few years ago....  regarding someone dribbling a tuna can of gasoline into a carb as they try to start it:  "You realize that what you are doing is extreme dangerous."  In two minutes he was rolling in flames.  Long sleeve polyester shirts will melt to skin.

I actually had two green vacuum lines running to either side of the carb. I don't see these in the Clymer. If I cap them, the bike wants to stall. Do I just need to adjust the idle?

How can I tell if the gas cap is vented? I haven't pulled to fuel tank off yet to see where the vent line goes, if there is one. I bought the bike with a box of parts, including the evap canister that was removed. Is it possible this was a California bike? He gave me a spare carb and a stator, too. And a pretty chrome starter that I installed today :)

Yep...definitely a Cali emissions bike, there's a label stating that. So...where do I get a vented cap?

I think the two barbs I was trying to cap are for the bowl vents. Is this where the evap canister would go if I left it Cali emissions? Should these just be left open to the atmosphere? I'm going to replace the lines and run them up the frame above the carb.

here's everything you wanted to know about the carb and then some...

You'd have to take apart the cap to see the difference.  One of the vents is plugged.  There's an in and an out... why I don't know.

I read a few complaints about the vented cap leaking, maybe I'll stay with what I've got and keep the tank vent.
