I have a 2007 S40 with 3200 miles. I am the second owner. Stock.

She has a little oil where it was not when I bought her. It is below the forward facing nut where the upper engine is bolted to the lower half. Attaching pics. My first thought is I need to re-torque the head bolts. What do you all think?

My '06 has the same issue. Take off the nut, get some threadlock and put it on the stud. It doesn't need much. Put the nut back on and tighten. Problem gone. It has to do with the head gasket, but it's nothing major to worry about. I ride like this since two years/8,000 miles. No problems.

Is there no concern of loosening one bolt? I guess I mean i thought all head bolts had to be released and re-tighened toghether? :o

From what I have read that should have been addressed with the newer bikes.

The main bolts are on the inside of the head. The one in front and the one in the back are just additional support and also do not have that much torque anyways. I don't see any issue in that. I have done it twice so far, nothing happened. The first time I didn't put enough threadlocker on it. Yes there is a certain sequence in how the bolts are to be removed or tightened, but usually on things like that the sequence starts from the inside to outwards, so the nut in front and the nut in the back would be first/last anyways. I don't know exactly the correct sequence on this motor, but if none is available, that's how I would work on it.

This is a head gasket leak.
While some say all should be loosen and retorqued...
Most say one at time is fine.
And the nut is supposed to be oiled before torquing, not locktited.

I have to tighten that nut from time to time. It takes longer to get my tool rool unhooked from the bike to get to my wrenches than it does to tighten it. ;)

I just put threadlocker on it to seal the threads, not to keep the nut tight. The nut on my bike actually doesn't come loose, but the loctite keeps the little bit of oil from coming out. Ever since i did it, it's bone dry around there.

Thanks for all the replies. This site is one of the main reasons I bought the savage. Never owned or worked on bikes before but I feel real comfortable learning with all the input/knowledge provided here. 8-)

Are those 2 nuts called cylinder base nuts-torqed to 6-8.5 ft/lbs? They are 12mm and mine was not loose. Could not tighten it anymore with the wrench and was unable to get a ratchet in the tight area. I am assuming I should loosen it then re-tighten? Any suggestions on the proper tool for this job? :-/

No, those are the cylinder to head nuts. The cylinder base nuts are the ones at the bottom of the cylinder where it meets the crank case.

I had a leak there a while back. I needed to get creative and make a torque adapter using a 12mm GearWrench in order to accurately torque the nut down. It can be done.

Oh, the leak then stopped, BTW, and has been dormant for years (KOW)!
