Title: Strange goings on with rear wheel bearings...
Post by LondonThing on 03/25/11 at 06:40:55

Hi all, just wondered if you lot could shed some light on this problem.

When the rear spindle is loose and the rear wheel is raised off the ground the bearings seam perfect, spin the wheel and it keeps going for ages. No grinding etc.

As soon as I tighten the rear spindle it almost ceases the back wheel... so much so its very hard to turn by hand.

I dont want to go and get new bearings if its something to do with the spacers etc. As far as I can tell I have everything right as far as spacers and washers go...

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Thanks all :)

Are you sure something else isn't binding?

If nothinng else is binding, I would take the bearings out, degrease them with a good cleaner/solvent, then repack them with some good bearing grease. This may elliminate your problem. If there may be an issue with the spacers some how. Additionally youu can put her together and give her a good test ride. This may loosen up the problem. Kind of hard to figure it out without actually seeing it or touchinng it!

Hi,

i thought i had a wheel bearing problem due to a clunking sound when the wheel was spinning round. However this turned out to be loose spokes on the rear wheel.

typically i found it was the spokes the out AFTER i replaced the bearings  >:(

your issue however seams more likely that the bearings are at fault, but just a few questions

what are you torque spec are you tightening the Axel bolt to?

are you sure the drum brake is not dragging?

i bought the full bearing kit for £16.80 exc p+p  from wemoto if needed  ;)

If the bearings are okay when its off the bike, theyre  okay. Id bet theres something wrong in the installation. That spacer inside the hub  in okay?

Take the axle & wheel & spacers away from the bike & assemble.. off the bike. Th axl should still spin just  fine.
