Title: New member, starting on a BCB Build!
Post by BAM4k on 03/21/11 at 20:19:17

I have been "lurking" on this website now for at least 3 months just waiting for the day that I can find MY Savage.  Well, that day finally came and I just had my new (to me) 2002 Savage delivered to the house.  3767 miles on the odometer and no problems as far as I can tell (using knowledge gained on this forum of course).  My main intention when buying this bike is to use the parts from Blue Collar Bobbers and make this thing AWESOME (not that they aren't already).  I will post pictures and notes along the way from beginning to end and document the process.  I am approaching this project as a complete novice having never done more than change the oil on my dads old Chrysler when I was a "kid".  Should be fun.........

WELCOME!!! Used to be that there were several "bobber" builds going on around here, but lately all the talk has been about the RYCA CS-1. Nice to mix things up again and we are looking forward to pics of your build from start to finish.  8-)

I think the bobber builds will pick up again as the weather gets warmer. I'm working on mine a lot more these days. The Rycas are pretty darn awesome though!

Remember to post pics for us as you progress bam  ;D

Thank you all for the words of welcome.  I will post pics once I get started.  Just an update, bike was delivered last night, earlier today went and got the registration, tag and title done, just got done ordering the full kit from Blue Collar Bobbers and it should be here in a few days.  Great folks there.

Also, I read the post in the market about not buying from "noobs" like myself but I will have a number of stock, like new parts available in the very near future.  Should I wait to post those in the marketplace until I am a gristled veteran of the forums or no?  (the "gristled veteran" part was tongue in cheek).

thanks again for your welcomes and I look forward to sharing as I go.

You shouldnt have a problem selling because we'll see that youre a "real" active member with pics and updates. That warning is more off to the people who register just to sell things and we know nothing about them. Those are the sketchy ones

Okay so here's an update.  Ordered the BCB kit on a Tuesday, it was shipped on Saturday, and arrived at my house on Monday afternoon!  So I watched the 2 hour DVD that was included in the kit to get a feel for what I was in for.  Not too bad, some electrical stuff needed to be rewound and watched a few times.  Tonight, Tuesday, I decided to get started with the tear down of the bike, here are some pics of that process (not that most of you haven't done this before and know what your bike looks like naked).

Here she is stock

http://p1.bikepics.com/2011/03/29/bikepics-2178317-800.jpg

The DVD included in the kit was extremely detailed.  I have not had to refer to the Clymer manual once so far!  For those of you that don't have one, I highly recommend one of these magnetic parts holders.  It's got rubber covered magnets on it so it won't mar whatever it's attached to and it was a life saver tonight.

Here she is with the tank and exhaust removed

My neatly organized work area (note all the tricks I've learned from this site, the ziploc bags, laid out cleanly, the PBR).

This is the seat I ordered from BCB, the quality on this is awesome!
http://p1.bikepics.com/2011/03/29/bikepics-2178327-800.jpg

Here are the tins, all ready to go to the painter first thing tomorrow morning.  Note the BCB rear fender in there.  Regardless of what their website says, this is a very solid steel fender NOT fiberglass.

Thats all for tonight.  I've gotta get some rest.  Any suggestions on paint would be highly appreciated, I'm thinking either a traditional flat black, white or dark hunter green.  What do you all think?

Until next time.........

Looks fun...just curious, I think you said you got the whole kit...what'd ya pay for it?
Also, which size seat did you get and do you think it will set you back farther on the bike or about the same?

I did get the whole kit, the total with shipping was $1,300.00.  The nice thing is though, it includes literally everything you need to do the conversion.  It even includes loctite, etc.

I went with the small seat at the reccomendation of Lance at BCB.  I'm not sure how much further back it will put me but he said it does put you back some and is a lot more comfortable than the stock seat.

I just dropped off the tank and the fenders, etc. at the painter's.  I decided to go with a burnt orange/copper color from house of kolors.  Here is a picture of the color I am using.

My brother had his ACE painted with what he thought was going to be very similar to your choice of colors, but his looks much more red than yours. But I think I like the copper color you chose more.

I BCBed mine last year right after they switched to the new metal fender but before the new prices :) High quality parts, very nice folks and super easy step by step instructions. You should not have to worry about the mods, only that it will take a few hours but it sure is fun.

Then you can do the jets and air filter while you have it apart, maybe powder coat the wheels too.

Looks great!  I can't wait for mine to be done.

What did you do for your mirror?  I've been looking online at some low profile ones but nothing has really jumped out at me yet.

hey arnold, did you notice a difference with the seating position? I'm 5' 9" and I feel like if I slide my butt back on the stock seat about 2 inches it would be perfect...

I got one of those universal Emgo mirror for one inch bars. My stem is too short though so I am not too happy with it but who looks in those things anyway :)

Get a long stem if you put it old school underneath but be careful of it touching the tank when turning.

This solo seat tends to make me seat back more, the stock seat made me slide forward towards the tank. I'm 6'1, 210 and the springs are pretty strong.

Let me first off start by apologizing for not posting more progress pictures up on this thread.  I have been dreadfully busy with my business and would only work on the bike for about 30 minutes at a pop when I did.

Now on to the cool stuff..... I DID IT!  My BCB conversion is up and running and all but complete at this point!  woo hoo!  The only thing left to do is wrap the exhaust and then it's off to the shop for dyno testing/tuning, new tires and a full detail job.  I am so excited and learned a ton through this process.  Please feel free to ask any questions that you have about the build and I promise I will be more active on here now that things have calmed down some.  Well, without further ado, here she is (more pics to come soon!)

The painter that I used is also a fabricator and when I told him what I wanted he was able to build it for me ($30 on top of the paint job!).  I've seen videos online on how to do it and it looks easy if you know how to weld.  You can even go to LowBrow Customs and they sell a kit with instructions on how to do it.  In my opinion, it was the easiest solution to the lack of a trip meter or gas gauge on this bike (plus it just looks freaking awesome!).

And here is a somewhat decent quality (sorry for the wind noise) cellphone video of the bike running.  The exhaust is actually a lot deeper in person and this thing is LOUD.  This is the muffler that comes with the BCB kit in case you were wondering.  I just talked to a highly recommended bike shop and they will dyno test and tune the bike for a really decent price so I think that's my next stop.

Dont leave those seats in the rain, mine got soaked not long ago because the cover flew off, it's like a sponge, hopefully will dry by next ride.

I think we all need that gauge or some form of it. A light would have worked on our but on your bike it looks just plain cool.

I had the idea to make a take-off at the petcock using a banjo fitting on one of the petcock bolts, run small dia. copper tubing to the center of the top of the tank near the seat, and run some clear plastic tubing up the top center of the tank with a pinhole vent at the top. I sort of gave up when I couldn't find the right sized banjo bolt.
