Title: Did I cause damage to electrical system?
Post by axiomtherapy on 03/20/11 at 12:18:11

I left my battery in. I was taking fender screws off closest to battery and got sparks off my wrench. Did I do something bad? Thanks for your help

No, nothing too bad. You know when its bad because you weld the spanner to the frame. In future disconnect the NEG side of the battery before you do anything near the battery.

I would check your fuses.... Ive had my battery arc a few times and blow fuses... just a sugestion, but if the bike starts up and there are no problems... you are free and clear!

I was stripping junk from my bike when I smelled melting rubber and electrical smoke. The bad wiring the previous owner had done for a cigarette lighter was shorting out on the bottom triple clamp. Oh yeah, disconnect the battery first.

Yeah, I had trouble putting a battery back in an S50 Boulevard I had a few years back. Had 'er all connected up and pushed the battery in and closed the trap door ... next thing you know there was smoke comin' from the battery compartment and that "burney electrical smell"! In a panic I dived under the Bike and released the trap door and pulled the battery down. Turned out the +ve terminal had grounded out on the side of the battery box (if you've ever wresteled with the totally stunned battery set-up on a VS800, you KNOW what I'm talkin' about!!) ... thought for sure I had the Bike fried, but nope, I just carefully re-installed the battery, making sure nothing shorted out on anything else and all was A-OK (luckily!) ... I'd say you're fine as far as your electrics go ...

Metal battery boxes -- at least unlined ones -- are just asking for trouble.
