Wondering if anyone has tried to measure the temp at the header/muffler joint?

RTV Liquid Gaskets? http://www.all-spec.com/products/85915.html

It says up to 650F. Anyone use this for their muffler gaskets? I just bought a pair of Dyna mufflers (anyone need one?), and I'm considering what gasket I should use in the installation.

I just ran mine in the barn for a few minutes at a steady 2500-3000 estimated RPM and it was 450 F at the joint area. 45 degree day, straight through glasspack, carb spacer mod and idle mixture adj. Lots of variables!

I was in Napa today and saw a tube of muffler joint sealant. Used on exhaust pipe joints when you assemble them to seal them better. Might work great on our bikes.

Thanks for the measurement Thumper! I guess I'll go to autozone and see what they have. Maybe they'll have something specifically for mufflers. That, or I'll just try the tin can idea from the Harley Muffler guide in the tech section.

I bought some joint sealant from O'Reilly's auto parts for $3 and it works great, recently put on that harley muff few weeks ago.

I was thinking about trying one of thoes silicone couplers they use for turbo intake systems but they max out around 500 degrees, guess ill just go with hi-temp silicone...

I would not recommend welding it because in the event that you are not happy with the results then it can be difficult to break the welds. I recently wanted to replace the straight pipe and homemade baffle that I welded on and ended up accidentally cutting all the way through the header. Now I am having to replace the whole exhaust system.
