Title: speedometer cable seal
Post by Gyrobob on 03/09/11 at 11:23:35

My buddy Jud and I are building two RYCA CS-1 Cafe Racers.  We recently took off the tanks, swingarms, and rear hubs to ship to RYCA.  When we disconnected the speedo cables, we noticed his had no seal at the bottom of the cable, but mine did.  I assume the previous owners of his bike sorta lost the seal.  Yesterday I tried to get another seal at the local Suzy dealer, but he couldn't find the seal in his parts diagrams.

Where can I get one of these seals?

Thanks for any info.

Not available as a separate item.

use an o-ring

Probably would have to order the whole speedo cable, eh?

On another subject, I tried to attach a pic (56kb) to my original post, and I kept getting error messages saying it was too large.  What am I missing here?

As said, buy an off the shelf rubber O-ring ... or try some teflon tape. Look under the starter ... I lost one of the Speedo cable seal rings under there once when I pulled the cable and the darn ring popped out! A minute to remove the the starting motor and retrieve the ring!

I found a place that sells these seals.  They aren't Suzuki parts, but they are the correct size and material.

They will sell them for about $5.00 each plus shipping, which should be minimal.

They will sell a minimum of ten at a time.  If there are 8 of you here that want these things, I'll order a batch of ten.

This is the proper (and long lasting way) to stop the oil leak at the place where the speedo cable joins the transmission case.

the yellow tape works prettry well - I'd take 2 seals if you can ship them with a postage stamp

some lost speed o seals hide under the starter - as most still don't cover this black hole with a shop towel before they start work on the bike

Excellent.  That's four of the ten now.  Six more seals and were in there!

That's eight so far!!  I'll be going by the supplier on Tuesday.  Two more and we'll have enough for a minimum buy.  Anymore than that will be gravy.

I wonder if I should get any extra, for the near future.

I also wonder if there are any other "strange" seals that aren't stocked by Suzuki that these folks might have.

I wonder if they have any headderswedders (exhaust wrap).   ;)

& mine is a Too Big O-ring I cut a section out of. It works fine, no leakee..
If you try it, cut the o-ring at an angle.

We never did get the seals.  The local guy said he'd order a minimum of ten after we paid in full.  We said we weren't paying until we saw one and made sure it would fit.  There it sits.

Take one of the seals to a local Bearings Wholesaler and have the guy at the counter match it up for you.

I have been buying oil seals, one at a time, at the wholesalers all of my life.

Dude, go to the hardware store, buy  a few orings, get a couple too long, make sure that they are fat enough to stay in place, at least as fat as a pencil lead, not a mechanical pencil,,,slice at an angle, take a section out, so it's almost Too Long to poke in the threaded cap.. I solved the problem in minutes and spent less than fifty cents, TRY SOMETHING, or, park it over an o ring .

Watch out for when you go to order from Ron Eyers or Bike Bandit as the standard Japanese short hand description for "Tachometer Cable Oil Seal" is TACH CABLE OIL which is certainly misleading to the reader and goes a long way to explain why nobody could ever find this part number before now.  Actually, it was found (and it was ignored) literally hundreds of times over all the years of parts list searching .....

The part actually looks like this:

And why aren't you guys just buying the factory part?
