Title: Ryca build, all day puttin' on parts.
Post by Abbey Normal on 03/05/11 at 14:58:22

Front end parts arrived yesterday and are in today.  Now it's just wait for my build slot to come up.
I haven't figured out how to post pics, so the photos are here...

Unless you want to be able to ride until your parts arrive, you can start cutting things off.

I got some new cutoff wheels this weekend so I'll be marking, cutting, grinding, and painting this week.

And thanks for the info on posting pics.

Oh happy days!  Ryca e-mailed today and my production slot has come up!!!

I put a new brake line on the bike after the clip ons and lowering.  I'll post some pics this weekend.  It's 30.5" fitting center to center, 45º fitting on top, 0º fitting at the caliper, with a 90º offset for the two fittings.  I got it from coastguard1975 on ebay and it arrived in just over a week.  From Canada.  Cost was $32 delivered.  It's a coated stainless steel line and the only "complaint" is it's a bit on the stiff side.  I haven't dealt in braided steel before so this may be normal.

Wow!! When you see an LS stripped to the frame like that one in the pic (gold accents on pully and caliper are WICKED!), you can easily see what an awesome Bike it is for inspiring the flow of "creative juices"! A thing of pure, un-clobbered beauty for sure!! 8-)

Yeah, when I took the one I bought from this:

To this:

I thought, "Hey, there's a good looking bike under there."

never mind that pesky battery business. Just always park facing down a hill!

Agree with Perry, those gold accents are HOT!

Here's a couple of pics of the new front brake line.

I cut off the covers on the original brake line to fill the clamp under the lower triple tree.  It was glued on and a bit of a booger to get off, but some patience and a sharp Xacto did the trick.  Then it got about 1/4" trimmed of the cover so it would fit neatly around the new brake line.  Then a little crimping on the clamp and, hey presto, it's in place.  The brake line is too stiff to fit in the clamp that goes on the left fork slider so it is kind of angled out a bit where it will stay away from the tire.

Looking great! Good work with the photo's and keeping track of your work. I also like your shop/work area!

Will your line slide through the clamp? If not, it seems to me the section of the line between the caliper and the clamp would resist flexing, since it's being pushed in a fairly straight line.

By the way, HEL supplies the rubber thingies with their stainless steel brake lines. They fit stock brake hose clamps/locators but still let the new lines slide.

Line will not slide through the clamp, like on the factory one.  I've got it aligned so the natural bend is away from the wheel and hoping & crossing fingers it will  keep bending that way under fork compression.  So far, in the comfort of the garage, it moves away from the wheel.

Moto, I am sooooo happy you have rescued that ugly duckling of a stickered bike and will turn it into a head turner.  I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of your bikes transformation.

What's funny is that next year I'll probably turn a perfectly good looking Savage into an ugly duckling frankenbike -- unless I can find another one as messed up as the yellow beast.

Wow, I didn't think it had been this long since the last post.  Update is my tank, seat pan and side panels came in yesterday and are at the painters.  2011 Honda VFR1200 Candy Prominence Red and what my painter calls "Cinnamon Certs with Retsyn"  (pearl white with a skosh of abalone and red flake).  Ryan thinks the rest of the parts are about 7-10 days away from being ready.  Maybe a July 4th ride????

The Big Brown Truck delivered!!  Friday night (unpack boxes and pack the muffler with additional FMF 4-Stroke silencer) and today were spent putting parts on the bike.  Bodywork is still at the painters.

For the most part, it has gone smoothly with only a bit of massaging to get things to fit.  Getting the seat mount to fit was the most time consuming and that was getting the cuts level and flush with the new parts.  The decomp lever was the next part that took some time.  I hope the rest goes just as smoothly

As school, homework, new job, lawncare, etc permit, I'll get the rest of teh parts mounted while I wait on the paint.  So far, so good!

The cafe racer configuration looks awesome, but is the bike comfortable to ride? Or people just use them for the vintage purpose of going short distances really fast?

Looks like the long rod for the decompression lever goes behind the frame tubes.

yes, for me, what you said- short distance.

The one pictured on the first bike has more of a 90º bend on the upper bend and the one delivered has closer to a 45º bend that contacts the frame.  I tried many adjustments and the only one that worked for me was outside the frame tube.  I still may look at bending the rod to fit inside the frame.  Also, the angle of the lever can't be too far forward or it puts a rearward pull on the rod instead of downward.  All little adjustments on the way to a rideable machine.
