Title: Left hand thread...
Post by Serowbot on 03/04/11 at 16:49:38

I wanna' make a list of lefty threaded nuts on the Savage to post in the tech section...

Each suggestion must be confirmed by at least two other members (don't want to get this wrong)...

Nuttin' worse than tightin' the crap out of a nut you're tryin' to get off... :-?...

Okay...  shoot... ;)...
(lemme' guess,... there's only one, right?...    ...short list...) ;D...

Okay Versy,.. no other nibbles, so I'll bite...

Is it the clutch basket nut (22mm}, and the shift rod nut?...

... and if it is,..
... is "clutch basket" the proper terminology?... :-?...

Oh cr@p!... Maybe I should can this idea...
I didn't know we had a full Torque spec list with this already listed...

Do you think it's worth making a Tech Post identifying the only two lefty threads on the bike... or just let people look down the Torque list?...

:-/...

PS,.. I wouldn't know the primary drive gear nut, if it bit me... :-?...

Maybe we need a town cryer.

Just keep announcing stuff we should know already, cause somebody doesn't.

I was surprise to find out, we had a transformation table of mikuni to dynajets.

I'm glad I don't have to name them, it's hard enough figuring out which one's which though.

Hint, it's on the left side.

Any shaft that rotates clockwise is a candidate.

Post by verslagen1 on 03/06/11 at 16:51:25

another hint, it's not a shaft.

I'll give it a shot, how's about the nut that holds on the drive pully for the belt?
Just for the record, my belt is held on with a buckle and my driven nut is kept out of sight. ;D

see last hint... not a shaft.

Just woke up from my nap to discover the hints are bogus.

Lefty is a shaft.  Not drive pulley though.

So you're stumped, good.

Here's the answer from "Valve Adjust? many moons ago...

Warning.  "Warning Will Robinson"!!!

I hate to say it, but DO NOT turn the engine clockwise from that position on the port side (yes, I was a sailor).  In fact, never turn the engine in a direction opposite the direction of operating rotation.

Rule of thumb...rotation direction on all bike engines (except flat horizontal ones) is always the same direction as the tire rotation.  See the arrows on the tire side walls?  Turn the engine that way only...it doesn't matter which side you're on.

Reason #1 - the engine turns counter-clockwise from the left side...

Reason #2 - that timing bolt on the rotor is left hand thread....that is a loosening direction.

Reason #3 - turning that way is rotating the cam chain backwards which puts any cam chain slack in the wrong direction through the gears and the tensioner, and the valves aren't timed correctly (in reverse)...

Reason #4 - you are rotating the starter clutch in the wrong direction...which is turning the starter gears against the starter....the clutch is engaged in that direction.

Ahhh!,... That's an important one too!...

As a side note,... I pretty sure a V-Star 650 turns opposite the tire rotation...
...either that, or it is a blow, bang, squish, suck, 4-cycle...
... which would explain why their gas tanks are so big...:-?...
