Title: Where to find Oil Filters for a Savage LS650
Post by randyradio on 02/21/11 at 15:22:33

Hi,  I've only been on here a few weeks and enjoying all the topics and knowledge here.  I got this 04 bike last week and have started working on it.  I got that carb plug pulled out todat and opened it a half turn.  Next I'm taking off aluminum side panels on the motor to strip to bare metal and buff out on a buffer.  Well that triangle right front upper panel I started on the 3 screws and soon struck oil.  Well, buttoned it back up but I could feel that spring loaded filter behind the panel.  Well that was a surprise since I went to to Auto parts places locally who both sold me spin on filters one a Fram PH6018 I think.  Well I think both places have it wrong.  It's not a spin on type filter I believe at this point.  So what's a local type store that will have the proper oil filter for this bike?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks.  There's no local
Suzuki dealer within 70 miles of my town so having a local Suzuki dealer is a prob.  There's Polaris, Kawasaki, Honda, Harley, Yamaha, but that's it.

any biek shop should have it or be able to get it for you. A Harley shop might not but it depends on the people working there. They COULD but...In any case getting them online is cheaper. Bikebandit.com , jpcycles.com , or ebay will all be cheaper than going to a shop.

I give you it not cause it's better, but because it lists all of the compatible models.

Thanks for that one.  I printed it out.  I'll see if the parts places here have any listings for these bikes.  I began to get a clue when I ran a search on advance auto parts on line and they showed a aftermarket filer for this Savage and a pic and It was not in stock locally but it was the correct non spin on type.

I went to a local little sports bike shop and they ordered some for me at around $3.00 each. Seems there's several bikes that use the same paper filters we do. I would have to dig out three feet of snow to get to the box for make and number, but they're all cross referenced in their books. And buy three or four. It's cheap insurance.

Tubes, fork seals . . . lots of the stuff we need are often cheaper at the local guys shops. I discovered that when it turned out our local Suzi dealer was an a$$ and an idiot. It also turned out that he was a crook. He was selling warranties and not filing the paperwork. People were going into other shops for covered work and found out they weren't in the system. His shop now appears to be closed. Watch your back out there.

Jack

Jack,  that's good info.  Hope you find the numbers. I ordered some EBC brakes today and 2 K&N filters for the bike.

I took about 5 part numbers in for several brands at a local O'Reilys. They were able to find all the filters but none were compatible or defaulted back to the incompatible Fram. However the associates were very helpful and went on a witch hunt to see to it I found the filter I needed. Seems to be a problem at the major auto parts. The only part number that matched was the one for the K&N which they had to order. Due to a flat shipping fee, I ordered several. Always good to have a couple on hand so you don't have to go through the fiasco every other oil change.
