Title: Savage Accessories
Post by mg66 on 02/11/11 at 10:11:56

For a bike that has been around for so long in one form or another there doesn't seems to be many accessories to individualize it.

Any places I should try on the interwebz that you avid members recommend.

Whatchawant?... :-?...

We take parts off anything, and make them fit...
That's individualizing... ;)...

Most here grab up what they can afford and make it work. various mufflers, various seats, various tanks, carbs, headlights, signal lights, wheels, shocks, etc. There's not a whole lot out there thats a direct bolt on.

True story. I was expecting a lot for such a long lasting bike model.

We've become so adept at adapting what is available it doesn't make sense to make a special part for us.

For Savage accessories, I have used several well-established locations…
•      Home Depot
•      Lowes
•      Ebay
•      Walmart
•      Swap meets
•      Local cycle savage yard
•      Garage Sales
•      Side of the road
As well as the infamous, “Hey buddy, you want that?”

Feel free to add any of your local establishments to the list.  ;)

It's a cheap bike, the riders are cheap.  You will lose money making accessories for Savages.

Why I like this forum.  If think you would like something, someone will tell you how to do/make it.

Yup if you want to drop 10k on useless accessories get a harley.  Actually if you want accessories for your savage lots of harley stuff will work. I dunno if harley davidson makes more money off the bikes or the accessories.  Its a pretty good business.

The Harley dealer in Flagstaff for many years went through a very bad period during the 70s.  A lot of people don't remember that Harley was only a couple of hours from bankruptcy when the execs made a deal to buy the company.  Anyway, business was almost non-existent for Chuck during this period.  He often told me that the only way that he made it was off of the t-shirts.  His shop was on I-40, and the truckers used to pull over into the dirt, hop the fence, and buy $200 in t-shirts at a time from him-gifts for friends and relatives on the east coast.

While bolt-on accessories can be handy, I think it's more fun to scrounge something on my own or repurpose something. The result is more unique.

Since this is my first foray into the cruiser world, I shake my head at how much more things cost, thanks to the Harley influence.

I have a gym bag, long enough to  fit right up behind me & still stick off to above the tail light. It has a piece of 1/8th ply sewn to the bottom, & another  glued in it, with D rings attached to the bag so It ties down. Youd be amazed at all the stuff thatll fit in there & still have room for beer.

Ohh, its maybe not so pretty, but, I dont need to believe the rest of the world is swooning at the sight of my bike to be a gigglin fool while Im riding.

If mg66 stands for Morris Garage 1966 MGB, you should be good at finding things to use for something else. My bike came with OE Suzuki saddle bags that I took off. I bought a direct fit (15 Min) crash bar/case guard for $90. Some don't like it 'cause it's only 1" stock. I have the small Slipstreamer Spitfire windshield like babyhog's photos show. By all means upgrade to the brighter Sylvania headlight bulb, about $6.50 at Wal Mart. Lots of folks use the Raptor petcock for more reliable fuel delivery and HD mufflers to get burned fuel out the back. One of the best things I bought for my Savage is the $5 cargo stretchable net with hooks on it. Accessories are limited only by your imagination. Have fun and suit yourself. Beauty is in the eye of the guy holding the paint can.   ;)

All that weight behind your back tire doesn't lighten the front end?

How does a Savage handle that rack when loaded? In the shop we named that style rack a "Wobble Inducer"

Do not even notice it....The faster ya go the better it rides ;D ;D ;D

Thinking of the little slim, trim, Japanese guys who designed this bike. If they didn't allow for our "Beans and Taters Bellies" out front I would guess a little weight out back evens out everything just right.

If it were me I would cut holes in the sides so that the tail light is seen from the side. As you have it the only light visible from the side is the reflector on the frame at the front.

and about Sq ft of shiny aluminum tread-plate in the rear.
if they can't see that then they are blind.

Besides I do not want to weaken the rack by cutting mass out of the structure...... it is made to haul a load not look pretty.

Kel has PROOF hes ridden that road. It says Proof, right on the picture..

Nothin wrong with that rack, IMO, The difference in mass would be minimal to skeletonize it. Id bet a mechanical engineer could cut out some places & not affect the strength measurably, bt, its a shop built rack, built to accomplish what it does & does well. The rule of 80/20  applies everywhere &, its done & done well enough for th man who did it to look at it & feel good about it. Fine job there Kel.

Heck, Kel has a table load of witnesses that he road them thar dragonish roads at a sedate 70+ mph  --  Kel made us prove it to him before he would believe he was actually going that fast.

Recording GPS units don't lie, however.

Then we turned them all off for the return trip as the evidence they provided was darning .....   our top speeds reached in the mountains are an eternal mystery to all of us.

;D

JOG

Drew it in AutoCad at work and then cut it out with a Jig saw and Cutting oil and about 10 Fine metal blades at home in the Garage
It is bolted to the frame with SS nuts and bolts No welding required

Still have the drawings if any one wants them

A Sumo Wrestler and ANY accessory would probably exceed the specified load rating of the Savage. :)

To defend my position that holes should be cut in the sides: yes you have a lot of reflective aluminum there but it is only reflective at a perfect right angle to the light source. A little off angle and it wouldn't reflect anything. Also you are assuming that the cagers will have their lights on at dusk ;D.

:)So when you build yours put holes in it........Point is, it's a good design!

That being said, I would do it differently, but isn't that the point!!! ;D

I would cut out certain areas, round off the corners (points always seem to get me), & add some small SS eye-bolts for tie down points. ::)

I look at anything as a starting point for me to modify it to better suit MY needs..... 8-)

Hope I made my point! :D

I have made all kinds of accessories for my cars and audio equipment over the years, and a few for the S40 so far. My criteria are:
Make it look like OEM equipment, or at least like it belongs.
Make it so it does not compromise safety or the functioning of anything else.
Make it reversible.
I also have a tendency to over engineer stuff.

Good Idea...  :)
