Title: Bobber Fenders? Post by Smokestack on 02/09/11 at 10:05:08 So, for all those working on a project or riding a completed Bobber, what was your choice for a rear fender and why? I'm looking to go that route, and was wondering what other folks have used. Thanks, all! |
Title: Re: Bobber Fenders? Post by 12Bravo on 02/09/11 at 11:32:48 I bought an old Savage fender off of Ebay and just cut it. I did that so I could leave my stock fender original in case I ever want to put it back on. http://i577.photobucket.com/albums/ss215/12Bravo10/Bikes/S40-3a.jpg |
Title: Re: Bobber Fenders? Post by Serowbot on 02/09/11 at 11:47:21 I found a fender off an old 70's bike... http://i600.photobucket.com/albums/tt82/serowbot/vg005.jpg?t=1297280809 |
Title: Re: Bobber Fenders? Post by MotoBuddha on 02/09/11 at 14:09:50 Yeah, go on eBay and search for motorcycle fenders. Lots of possibilities, especially chrome fenders from the '70s and '80s. |

What gaiters are you using? |
Title: Re: Bobber Fenders? Post by Demin on 02/09/11 at 17:44:50 I use trailer fenders. They are fairly cheap, strong. They look nostalgic.Follow the contour of the tire fairly close. http://p1.bikepics.com/pics/2008/05/23/bikepics-1298492-800.jpg |

Title: Re: Bobber Fenders? Post by thespot413 on 02/09/11 at 22:27:37 trailer fenders all the way. $25, cut and drill to your liking |
Title: Re: Bobber Fenders? Post by jrm8486 on 02/10/11 at 08:37:03 Denim, did you try the stock seat w/ the trailer fender? was wondering because thats what I want to do,don"t know if you can see the frame rails that attach the fender.w/ the stock seat. Also what size is your fender? it looks perfect. |
Title: Re: Bobber Fenders? Post by Serowbot on 02/10/11 at 10:30:59 Demin hardtailed it... if you want the fender that close to the tire, you'll have to do the same. ... or use fender struts, and have the fender unsprung... |
Title: Re: Bobber Fenders? Post by Demin on 02/10/11 at 14:59:31 Yeah,I have tried the stock seat on it,but there's still a gap where the back of the stock seat it notched out.I think it's a 7" wide.If I remember correctly it's part # 1263 from Northern Tool.My bike is hardtailed.I used the stock mounting bolts. If you do that, you'll have a big gap between the tire and fender.Or you could mount it to the swingarm,it'll move with the tire then. |
Title: Re: Bobber Fenders? Post by Smokestack on 02/11/11 at 09:19:49 I think I'm gonna go the Fender Strut+Swingarm Mount route. No hardtail for me, the old bones wouldn't take it! Hey dasch, got a pic of that GSX-R jobbie? Edit: So I can pick up a trailer fender for pretty cheap at a place up the road from me, the question is, what size? Edit #2: Never mind, I got it figured out! Thanks again, all! |
Title: Re: Bobber Fenders? Post by dasch on 02/11/11 at 11:33:55 A picture - not really, but I have something better :-) Here, that's mine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ww02tknZ0vk |

Title: Re: Bobber Fenders? Post by groupus on 02/15/11 at 13:08:12 Here's a thread i did for my bobber project: http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1248802832/0. it documents the how and why for a trailer fender i put on it. lots of words, but some good pics too. here's a more recent iteration using the stock rear fender from an xs650: http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/hs049.ash2/35790_596576174760_35905377_34571909_1835865_n.jpg the trailer fender cost about $15 plus paint and supplies and such. the xs650 fender was free from a friend who is building a hardtail. old chrome jap bike fenders are cheap and abundant at some shops and ebay. both these required a decent amount of cutting, drilling, and sometimes hammering ;D. they both need to sit up off of the tire a bit to keep from scraping over bumps, but the xs looks better because it has more of a curved shape. |
Title: Re: Bobber Fenders? Post by ocdave on 02/15/11 at 15:32:24 Groupus that's a sweet looking ride. I just picked an old Japanese bike fender from a salvage yard myself for my bobber project. I hope it turns out as well as yours did. Can you give me a close up pic or tell me how your bullet turn signals are mounted? that is going to be my next fabrication. |
Title: Re: Bobber Fenders? Post by groupus on 02/15/11 at 19:38:00 well thank ya. Its a clever little ditty i made with a piece of angle iron to act as a seat mount and turn signal bracket. flattened it a bit to be greater than 90 degrees, cut down the center of the V on the ends, splayed them out and drilled holes for mounting to the stock seat tabs and for signals. I can't give you any specific direction or measurements, i pretty much figured it out as i went along :D and yes, a rather large hammer was used. http://p1.bikepics.com/pics/2010%5C07%5C09%5Cbikepics-2015766-full.jpg |

I keep reading it & keep reading it. The way I do math, it looks like not cutting it woulda meant not needin to weld it,, OHH, but wheres the fun in that??? |

Title: Re: Bobber Fenders? Post by groupus on 02/16/11 at 18:08:20 Thanks Perry. I would really like to get some z bars or something like that when i got some spare change. Also have fork gaiters to put on. that fender's chrome is a little pitted and such, but i like the shiny ::) |

So groupus, your seat/signal mount isn't welded to the frame, only bolted to the stock seat mounts? |

nope, not welded. the bolts go through the bracket and into nuts. it rests on the frame rails but i did put strips of 3M double sided tape between it to pad it/hold things tight. works great and hasn't failed in about a year/3000 miles. welding would be better, but everything on mine is bolt on/reversible to stock. and BC-Savage, I put the airbox back on shortly after this b/c I couldn't get the tuning straight. I still love the look even with it. |
