Title: bike update Post by jonnyb021104 on 02/06/11 at 09:22:59 okay i just went and got my bike dynoed it currently has 37 horsepower and 39 ft lb of torque, i feel that is a pretty good upgrade from stock. all i have done is upgrade to the mikuni 38mm carb and have a 2 1/4 straight exhaust, it sounds mean but is tuned so well it runs better than stock. will get pictures when i get back this afternoon. what shound be the next thing to do? |

Title: Re: bike update Post by Ed L. on 02/06/11 at 18:49:59 Port the exhaust port in the head. There is a cast lip that restricts the flow right where the pipe bolts to the head. Pack the valve cavity with paper towels and go after the lip with a dremel and a cutting bur. You can take a lot off with no problem. Make sure the exhaust valve is closed and use a shop vack to suck all the aluminium dust up. If you have to go into the right side cover which covers the stator slot the bolt holes on the ignition sensor and advance the timing. I was able to get about 2 1/2 to 3 degrees advance which gave me another 300 usable rpm on the to end. Of course with the bigger carb a performance cam would be the real t!ts. |
Title: Re: bike update Post by jonnyb021104 on 02/06/11 at 19:46:23 where can i get a cam? what would you suggest? oh yeah and what is the biggest differences between the 4 speed transmission and 5 speed besides the other gear obviously? |
Title: Re: bike update Post by verslagen1 on 02/06/11 at 20:36:32 try lancer for the cam and final drive for the 4 and 5 speed are nearly the same. |
Title: Re: bike update Post by jonnyb021104 on 02/06/11 at 21:05:53 so which do you think is better? is the 5 speed a good item to upgrade to? |
Title: Re: bike update Post by verslagen1 on 02/06/11 at 21:21:15 The only reason I had for choosing the 5sp over the 4sp was the starter clutch safety. But now I can fix that... http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1288911670 |
Title: Re: bike update Post by Ed L. on 02/07/11 at 16:12:48 nice tip on making a 4 speed reliable. |
Title: Re: bike update Post by RidgeRunner13 on 02/07/11 at 16:35:50 The 4 speeds had a much better 'spread' between gears. :) For the 5 speeds, it seems they just split the difference between what was 3rd & 4th. ::) Pretty much a useless change if you ask me. :o |
Title: Re: bike update Post by justin_o_guy2 on 02/07/11 at 17:45:19 I wonder if they did that at about the same time the EPA started makin them send them out lean. |
Title: Re: bike update Post by jonnyb021104 on 02/07/11 at 18:35:19 well i kinda like the the 4 speed it is different from the norm. anyways i got my bike out and ran it a little bit and it is pretty quick now, i still want to go faster though. |
Title: Re: bike update Post by JohnBoy on 02/07/11 at 20:36:30 Dude, I love my little thumper...but a speed demon they aint. Don't get me wrong, you can make hem faster. But, to get a lot faster it takes money and lots of time. |

Can you play with the pinion gearing any?? Change the motor to trans gearing to make use of the added power?? Also, you can play with your exhaust length to find the optimum length for power. I did this to 2 of my sportsters and one had the best power band with 31" straight cut pipes and the other with 38" slash cuts. The only difference between the engines were cam duration! The straight cut vs slash cut can make a difference with power out put. And remember, straight pipes typical push the power band further up the RPM range. Another place to look for a little more oomph is the length and angle of the intake tract. My TR6 responed very nicely to kicking the carb out to the rightand adding 1.75" to the intake. A good flat power band will trump peaky numbers any day. I meet a lot of folks that tune for peak power at a certain RPM and then wonder why I can walk away from them if it isn't just a straight line run. |
