Title: cam chain adj.
Post by hardrock785 on 01/30/11 at 10:45:40

i am working on a savage engine, its the 2nd year made i believe 87 looks like cam chain adj. ran out of adj. and fell out .thats what im thinking anyway the engine is in several boxes. ive been reading about modifing said adj. im perty handy and doesant pose much of a prob. i was wondering if the new adj. out of a more modern unit like a boulavard would be modified from the factory, you know made so it dont fall out when it runs out of said adj. or is this a continuing prob.reguardless of year. like i said i can mod. the old one but it would be nice to just order another  one when i order all the other parts THANK YOU, WADE

The real problem is the chain has stretched too much. Sure you can modify the tensioner to take up the extra slack, but the chain is still too long, which also puts the cam slightly out of time. As long as the engine is apart, get a new chain and just put the tensioner you have back together.

That said, I got a modified tensioner and I'm still replacing the chain.

This is the only way I can see mod'ing the adjuster to retain the plunger.  Not shown is the pin that goes in the hole.
Jog did it another way with a wire under the pawl.
Factory didn't ever modify the adjuster for this problem, even as simple as it is to fix.

im wondering if the prob. is when the cam chain is out of adj. the plunger flops around and falls out? if a guy keeps the chain adj. he aint going to have any trouble, or was this a factory defect?
thank YOU GUYS FOR ANY HELP!! ill certainly replace the chain and adjuster what i cant figure out the engine only had 12000 on it. what is a good sourse for replacement parts? gasket set n stock bore rings, chain n adjuster. THANK YOU AGAIN. WADE

adjuster life...

average life is about 20k miles.  earliest I think around 8k.  all depends on your oil and useage.  short trips with full cool down tend to be hardest on the chain.
