Title: Oil Leak I've never seen before Anyone got advice?
Post by Stan on 01/29/11 at 15:43:44

This bolt leaking oil. Someone who owns a different bike said this is probably a pivot joint, but I can't find the purpose of this bolt in the Clymer's manual. So for the less mechanically inclined, what does this bolt do and is there a washer in there that just went bad or this oil leak a sign of something worse?

In a nutshell, can I fix it myself. If so, how?

Thanks!

Let me just say... that bolt don't leak.  Can't leak, the rear engine mount bolts to it.  The oil is just collected from some where else.

Thats a engine mount bolt, there is NO way for that to leak oil.  You need to take the right-side side panel off and unscrew the airbox door and check in there, chances are you've leaked oil or gas into the airbox.  You need to find where the oil is coming from and why.

If it is a allen type head it threads (and 3 others like it ) into captured nuts and help hold the swing arm mount in place as I recollect. 3 were missing from my Savage sidecar tug when I got it. One of mine now clamps the lower end of the sidecar bracket that goes up the side of the frame there to the shock stud. Like the others said, there is no oil source there, it is coming from somewhere else. Max

No, the swing arm connects to banana shaped plates welded to the frame. The bolt in question is for engine mount plates (one on each side) that also double as mounts for the battery box.

Stan - listen carefully to all  your riding "buddies" for the one that tells you you have to break down the bike to frame and remmove the engine..well, you musta  done something  bad to him. :-? :-?

Darn I think we missed how to fix this "leak"... Wash the bike, use some degreaser.
Darn thing is so full of crud it's leaking out places that have nothing to do with oil.

I say it's from the air box. You should just drain it. Maybe the air box has a leak.

My thought too. Take a pan and open up the air box drain line plug.

I finally got time to open the airbox today and it was full of oil. I removed what was probably 1-1.5 cups of the stuff.

The only place I imagine this oil could be coming from was the crank case rebreather hose that dumps into the airbox. The thing is, I cleaned the filter 1,500 miles ago and had no oil in the airbox then.

I don't know if there's a valve or something else on the crank case end of the hose, but whatever is there, it's not stopping the oil. Is there a valve that just isn't functioning, should I be concerned about the engine producing too much blow by or there something else I'm not considering?

I know there isn't too much oil in the bike. Levels read just under perfect.

No valve, just a mesh screen to try and keep the oil mist out.

Did you overfill?  fill on the kickstand?

Did you take a heavy bump?

Drop the front end, raise the rear?

something.
