Hey, all. I was wondering if there was any incompatibility between the Savage and the S40 when it comes to engine mounts, drive train, etc.

If all goes well, I'll be picking up a used 1996 Savage for a solid price, so I'm stoked! ;D It runs well and is an opportunity to do a bit of wrenching and drink a few brews with some buddies over the rest of the winter.

I've also learned that wrecker/rebuilder in my area has a mid 2000's S40 that had rear-ended someone with enough strength to bend the front forks and snap the steering stop on the frame. The insurance company wrote it off, a little prematurely I think, but the engine only has 355 km on it. The tank, wiring, back end, all engine and tranny parts are nearly mint.

My fiendish plot is to pick the wreck up for a song and drop the brand new bits into the 1996's insurable frame and then sell off the leftover stuff. Sound like a good idea? Is there a roadblock to my evil plan?

No difference at all between a '96 and any other year, frame wise.

I put an '02 engine in a '88. Use the CDI that comes with the engine just to be sure.

There some differences in some of the years, but if you transfer everything you'll have no problems.

Hey SmokeStack,
The LS650 engine runs ok then..no smoke..thumps or rattles??

If you are selling the LS650 engine and if 'CalisOsin' (guy who just had some problems with valves arguing with piston ) doesnt want to take it...
Then im interested, depending on how much it would cost to ship to Brisbane.

So let me know if you would consider that and how much you need for the engine (dont need electrics or carb as I have a complete bike minus top end here).

Thanks for clearing that up, verslagen1. I'd heard from many, including dealers, that any differences were essentially cosmetic, but it's nice to know I was right.

As far as selling the engine goes, the only certainty is that I'm buying the '96. It runs well; I cold started it with no trouble, it'll probably need the Cam Chain looked at, as there was a bit of noise thereabouts. Other than that no real issues I could see besides a minor oil leak around the exhaust, which I have been walked through by this site and believe to be a pretty easy fix. I haven't even talked to the wrecker yet, so I might not be able to negotiate a good price on the newer S40. I will, however, keep you all informed about the status of the whole thing.
