Title: ARGGG!!!!!!! more problems!!!! oil leak
Post by logan31907 on 01/26/11 at 10:34:56

I got oil leaking somewhere around the cylinder, where the top half connects to the bottom half. Its a small leak, but it gets all over the bottom half of the cylinder (like on the ridges of the cylinder.

1. Is it the gasket that needs replacing?
2. It requires me to pull the motor apart, doesn't it?
3. Could it be something else? I saw a post with oil leaking and the problem was some sort of plug. Could it be that?
4. If anyone has links to the DIY for my oil leak, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks everyone.

P.S. I'm ordering my raptor petcock today

A common problem of oil leaking where you describe is the oil plug, I believe you may also try to re-torque the head cover bolts.

Here is link to oil plug leak fix.

But is it the oil plug or the gasket?

The Head cover doesn't really have a gasket; it has a thin film of rtv sealer for a gasket. Normally the oil plug is pressed in with no sealer of any kind and can pop up and cause the leak. Removing the head cover, putting sealer on the plug cap then replacing the cover will  normally fix the problem.
