How in the world did it just from, "attach vice grips and put a screw driver through the hole" to "disassemble the shock"?

I have a vice grip on there, and I put a screwdriver through the hole.......... now what? I can't seem to twist, turn, pry or pull anything on there.

Advice?

It took me a hydraulic bench press, couple of 2'' or so adapters to squeeze just the spring, lots of nerves and I almost lost a finger when entire thing slipped out of the press.
Anyhow, there's a thin bolt on the pushrod, you can see it, but you can't break it loose without pressing the spring. Be very carefull. Assembly is even worse :D

Thats the kind of stuff I wont mess with, POwerful springs are dangerous & not having the Right Tools for handling them is a recipe for disaster. Sometimes we get hurt & it never heals. From my experienced perspective, playing with such things for no more gain than making it look better is taking a chance on getting genuinely injured for nothing of any real importance. The Risk/Reward equation just doesnt work out, IMO, others may have a different set of values.. but then, I rarely even wash my bike.

Put the visegrips at the very top of the rod which doesn't go into the shock,Other wise you scar the rod and it and it will leak shock oil.

couple of strips of metal to protect the rod from the vice grip at a minimum.

But I'd preferr a saddle that fits between the spring and put it in a vice.
