Title: Jacket recommendations?
Post by babyhog on 01/05/11 at 07:50:06

I'm going to buy a new jacket for this season.  I'm thinking textile, probably.  I know fit, design, looks, etc are all personal decisions.  I'd like comments on brands recommended or not recommended?  Points that I should watch for and things to avoid?  Good places to buy, bad places to avoid?  I love DennisKirk, website and ebay store.

Ones I've looked at but know nothing about - Joe Rocket, River Road, Shift, Scorpion, FieldSheer, MotoGP, PowerTrip, Speed & Strength, Icon......

Here's my current favorite, but its a bit pricey!  Looking at lightly worn ones on ebay too.

Shift "Envy"

That is about the sharpest jacket I have seen.

I looked at a bunch of them at the dealer. I got a Joe Rocket because:
- it was one of the few perforated leather ones I could find
- it was all black
- it was available in long sizes
- it was made better than most of the others

Leatherup.com
Not the best but good pricing. Customer Service is lame but both my brother and I have purchased from them (I bought leather, he got textile). So far I've been very happy with the jacket I bought...made in Pakistan I think...

Good looking jacket Buddha.  I love all black, but I thought maybe I'd give in and add some color for visibility sake.  I have all black leather now, not really made for motorcycle, but I sew, so I altered it.  I just want a new one.  Good vote for Joe Rocket.  Thanks.

Bubba, never bought from leatherup, but I've looked at their site.  Thanks.  I'll look at them again.

I wear this when it is cold - have not had use the fleece liner yet even at 30F temps - the wind does not cut through it.....I love it!

Joe Rocket textile Phoenix V textile.Good from 45 degrees up with liner, but short waist. As you can see, I'm a minimalist when it comes to add-ons and clothes styles. Great in hot weather when moving. Good quality snaps and zips. But 149-$169 is high for my budget. I gave $120 from a dealer/friend deal. They all fit different and check things like cubbies and pockets, flaps, etc. Same brand has different features. Got lots of comments on good looks. (the jacket, not me) My daughter uses me for photo practice. This is an early attempt for 4-H. She won 3 places out of top 4 for the county, but we don't brag about it much.   ::) Or her winning the county fair baking contest with no help from us. (She's 13) My winter jacket is really cheap, and I prefer coveralls. After 1 1/2 summers I can recommend JR. Happy shopping. I know you girls like it.

I have not looked into the Shift Envy, but their "Aero" is very good for hot weather.  Very well vented, almost like wearing a shirt.

The Technik textile jacket is also very good.  I've crashed in it a couple times and it saved me old bones some pain.

Or there are high-viz mesh vests like road crews wear.

yes I wear the his mesh vest in the summer.....I WILL BE SEEN!.....not going to do much for road rash prevention - but hopefully visbility prevents the potential for road rash.

Olympia Moto Sports makes some nice stuff. I've got (and really like) the GT Air Transition All Season. My wife got me the Bomber from Fox Creek for Christmas this year.  Really, really nice leather jacket. A bit pricy, but man is it nice, very high quality, nice vent system, appears very well made. Also looks OK for casual wear. Best of all (and this is something I'm not used to) it fits. Just Google Fox Creek. Good luck on your search---Luke

RC - I said "a little" color!  LMAO.  I'm sorry, I must be too vain because I can't imagine myself riding around in that.  Drivers definitely shouldn't be able to say they didn't see you.

But then again, maybe I need to try something like that, being I am a very small woman....

I like Boofer's jacket too, and glad to hear good things on Joe Rocket.  Hadn't really heard anything good or bad, you just never know with some popular name brands whether they are worth the hype or not.  And brag all you want about your daughter, Boofer.  I think its sweet, and impressive!

Will look up all the suggestions made so far. (Fox Creek looks ex-pen-sive, at first glance!) Thanks everyone.  Any bad experiences?

If you don't mind not having the newest versions, http://www.newenough.com usually has pretty good deals in their closeout section.

For example, http://www.newenough.com/street/closeouts/textile_jackets_and_pants/cortech_by_tour_master/ladies_lrx_series_2_textile_motorcycle_jacket.html gets decent reviews and comes in different colors.

I think it is a good idea to wear a high-viz vest, but most people wouldn't be caught dead in them.  A good alternative is a Filson Blaze vest.  They look cool and have lots of handy pockets for your calculator, pens and pencils.  Kinda pricey, though.  Luckily I had a job in construction surveying, and scored one.

close outs @:

jafrum.com
ironponymotorsports.com

I have bought stuff from both no problems - my boss wears a Joe Rocket jacket - he has not had any issues with his.

That jacket you picked is very cool with the blingy highlights and tapered fit for ladies......but I will stand by my hi-vis approach - tiny lady in dark riding gear is sexy  :o- but not practical from a safety standpoint...says the corporate safety dude.

Closeout is my middle name!  Many thanks for that link, I'll definitely browse them this evening.  I actually saw one like the 2nd link on Ebay, I think I have it on watch.

That Shift Envy jacket is the cat's a$$!! I love it!

I have a yellow/black Joe Rocket Meteor that's 5 yrs old ... very comfy, but not sure about the quality ... hasn't been worn a whole lot as I have a no-name leather that I sometimes shuck on for a Ride as well ... the stitching is coming undone in several places on the J.R. ...

WOW - I got that jacket last month, it is very nice - good and heavy, good armour and runs very true to size - price doesn't hurt either!    I haven't had the chance to use it yet, as I have electrics.  Can't wait to try it as soon as I can.  Very stylish :) I love Newenough.com  ;D

I've been using a First Gear mesh jacket with no complaints for hot weather. It is easy enough to clean, just remove the pads from the jacket and wash. I also have a First Gear leather which I really like for colder weather. The biggest complaint with the leather is that the collar closure used velcro instead of a button or snap. If not set right the velcro will rub on my neck and can bug the he!! out of me unless I wrap a bandana around my neck. I had to trim about 1/4 of an inch off the velcro when I first got the jacket just to make it comfortable. The leather has the zippered vents on the front and back which really helps keep cool on warmer days. Just remember cheap gear is better than no gear..

Well, I found a Mesh jacket cheap on Ebay and decided to take a chance.  I think its an older model, because it isn't on FieldSheer's website anymore, but it was new with tags, and I got it for $9.99 + around $15 shipping, so I figured 25 bucks for a new jacket was cool.

I got an X-Small and was a little worried, but it fits great.  The back armor feels weird, so I removed it, but I will try it when/if it ever stops snowing long enough to take a test ride.  The waist band is right at the top of my jeans, I like that.  The sleeves adjust with velcro, so I can tighten them up on my skinny little wrists.  The shoulder pads feel a little weird too, but I've never worn a true motorcycle jacket, so I guess I'll get used to it.

There is good reflective stitching on the straps, and the FS logos on the shoulder pads really reflect well.  I think I'm gonna like it.

I just wanna ride, man!

Here it is:  sorry, pic is a bit blurry, dang flourescent lights in the garage

Having just tested my Alpinestar jacket, I can say anything padded is better than cotton, leather or shirtsleeves. When I hit the vehicle with the fender and fender bumper on the sidecar 2 weeks ago and spun the rig around and then the bike over on the left side with me still on it(at least for a while). The parts that didn't hurt were the upper body, have a horrible bruise on my left hip that is still painful to move, a torn up fingernail on my right bird finger, and almost healed nose where my glasses scratched it before spitting out a lens. Black eye has healed and face shield on the helmet ,which was up at the time is scratched, but it did its job of protecting my head and the jacket my upper body. Had I had my gloves and padded trousers on, it would have only been the black eye, glasses and face shield. Slowly getting the rig driveable again, seems the sidecar is a Canadian version and the USA version is different, USA 19"wheel and long fender and fender bumper and different mounting vs a 16 " wheel and shorter fender. Chasing parts in Canada now for what it is worth. Bike got the new pegs today as the left one was toast so is road ready. ATGATT means more to me now. Max

Max, sorry to hear about your accident, but thanks for your thoughts on the jacket protection.  No one ever wants to have a spill, but one never knows, right.  So since this is my thread, I'll ask... how are you coping with the Big C now?  You are riding, so I take that as a good sign.  I hope you are kicking its azz!

Babyhog, thanks for asking. have a PET/CT on Monday morning to check up on the chemo progress, but I'm feeling fine. Was back on the road today with the sidecar rig, sans fender and it felt so fine. Kid brother and I got over an hour of seat time in and great lunch together to boot. In all probability keeping the cancer at bay is the best I can expect, but no pain and only other minor annoyances, tingly fingers and feet, drop lots of stuff, working on the bike, UTV or PU results in a potty mouth after while. Probably the wrong place for this. Max

Just washed the Alpinestars yellow jacket and the blood from the scratch on the nose even came out with a little help from grandma's spot remover and a spry stuff. I have an early, like 1998 Alpinestars textile and this newer one, both in the short sport rider style, a Joe Rocket 3/4 length textile and JR mesh one for the days over 100. The Alpine one worn over a fuzzy(can't think of the correct name) jacket with the wind and waterproof liner is really toasty. All have armor in the forearms, elbows, shoulders and back. Max

Glad to hear you're doin' better Max!

Speaking of M/C jackets ... I've never had a problem with buying used gear especially jackets (boots n' Lids are the exception) ... have 3 M/C jackets and picked 'em all up pre-owned ... most expensive was $50 (Joe Rocket) and least (my latest aquisition a week ago) $10 ... a near perfect condition leather Rhino with full back, shoulder and elbow padding in black/blue/white to match my ZZ-R! There are always folks out there selling next-to-new Bike gear for next-to-nothing 'cause they're getting out of the sport, cleaning out a garage, etc.

I have an Alpinstars mesh jacket I purchased new few year ago. I wear it when I want to look like a transformer ;D ;D
All kidding aside, it has the armor and a liner as well.
Lately I have been wearing my leather seahawk jacket. It is heavy and with a  turtle neck as well as my leather vest, keeps me toasty warm.
Well as long as temps are at least 40 that is..
When temps are over 60 I have my pink lighter weight leather jacket.
I have a wool coat that I wear at times as well as a couple different denim jackets. Then their is the flourescent coat I have as well.
I have alot of jackets as seems our weather changes every 10 mins so it calls for more than one kind of jacket here..  ;D
I go for comfort as well as protection. My pink leather jacket has the marks from when I went down. It reminds me how fast one can have an accident and be caught off guard, as well as be glad they had the protection when it happened.. :) kim
