Title: battery
Post by logan31907 on 01/03/11 at 20:24:30

I think my battery is dead and is in need of a recharge. I got the schumacher 1.5amp speedcharge and it came with terminal ring connectors. Is it necessary to completely remove and disconnect the battery when charging? Or can I just permanently install the ring connectors to the terminals and hide the wire somewhere underneath the tank so I can just charge it with the positive and negative terminal leads still connected and wired to the bike and battery? Is it safe to keep it all connected or do I have to completely remove the battery from the bike. (Keep in mind that I don't have a garage to store my bike. I live on the second floor now, but will be moving next month. But when I move, I'm just gonna roll my bike into the living room for storage :D. I won't let it run inside of course)

Also, is there a way to clean the battery so that I can see the level of electrolyte fluid between the two marks on the battery case? When I go to check it thru the window, its so scuffed up that I can't tell where the fluid is at.

I think most of us have a plug of some sort installed to charge the battery at any time. No need to disconnect anything. After making sure the liquid level is correct, just plug it in and forget it.

The window for checking the battery is worthless in my experience,......you have to remove the battery to check it and/or to fill it. But in my experience, if you use nothing but the smart maintainer/float chargers, (13.4v max) it won't need checking but once a year.
