Title: florida license plate requirements
Post by logan31907 on 12/23/10 at 15:58:13

What's required to obtain a motorcycle license plate in Florida? I live in Pinellas County. I've heard different things from different people. And if insurance is required to register, what kind and what's the minimum requirements?

Oh, and if I have a license plate from an automobile that I no longer own, can I transfer that registration to a motorcycle and get a new plate? <---probably a dumb question.

Logan, might I suggest you contact the DMV? They should be able to help you with this information. You also might be able to go online and obtain the information there as well..Good luck..:) kim

Thanks kim. I searched the net but couldn't find any answers. I was even searching the fl dmv site as well. I just wasn't sure if anyone in fl remembered what was required when they went to register their bike. And with the holidays, the gov't offices are closed.

Logan here is what I found on doing some investigation. Hope it helps..

First go to to  florida dmv
click on official website florida dept of hwy safety motor vehicle Taqs and titles.
That will take you to Motor Vehicles registrations, tags, titles.
Then click on Manuals and Guides under the How Do I tab.
From there that will take you to the Table of contents
DMV Procedures Manual
click on section 2
Scroll down to almost the bottom till you see RS-61
This is for Motorcycles, Mopeds and Disability access vehicles.
These are the requirements listed as of Aug 5, 2010.
Again hope this helps..
Man my fingers are tired..  ;D  ;Dkiim

As far as I know you can't transfer car tags to motorcycle tags in FL.
If you wear a helmet, you don't have to have insurance.
I have both, helmet and insurance.

I think helmets are manditory if you are under 21 and are a new rider. If you are under 21 the DMV will give your bike a white tag with red numbers so the local law can make sure you are not out without a skid lid. If you are over 21 the DMV wants you to have $10,000 insurance or wear a lid. When I registered my bike in Florida about 5 years ago I had insurance but the DMV didn't even want to see any proof of it, all I had to do was say that I wear a helmet. They might of changed that part of thier policy by now. They will want to see the bike in person and compare the VIN numbers on the bike's title to the VIN numbers on the bike before issuing you a tag.

That's odd...to get a new plate, they want to see the bike in person to compare vin numbers? So I'm supposed to ride my bike (with no plates) to the location where they issue tags to get a new one? Can I  get my license plate BEFORE my  motorcycle license endorsement?

Logan, if none of those web sites were able to give you all the information, then I would suggest you go down there in person, have someone explain the laws to you or give you a booklet, list of what all the rules and regulations are.
Best of luck to you.. :) kim

Kim, I downloaded the pdf manual I got  from the link u gave me and read the whole document. It stated that proof of insurance was not required. I just got thrown off guard when I was told that I had to bring the bike in for vin comparison, which isn't a problem. I'll just call them up next week and ask. Its just nearly impossible to speak to someone over the phone.  I just thought someone who recently got a bike and plates here in FL knew off hand what I needed.

Come to think of it I was transfering the  bike's title in from Pennsylvania and registering it in Florida. I also had to transfer the title of an old Ducati and needed to bring that bike in to the DMV on a trailer. Call the DMV and ask what they need, I'm just letting you know what I went through with my bikes.

How come they don't make us bring automobiles in so they can compare vins but require motorcycles to? Its truly impossible to speak to someone at the dmv. I remembered I tried to call them to ask how much it was to renew a DL and I didn't get an option to speak to a live person.

I guess I will just go in there and ask them in person.

Well I guess that they were busting my stones pretty hard. They were concerned that the bikes or titles were stolen, at least that was the line they used. I can't remember if they pulled the same sh!t with the car or not. If you are going for a driver licence renewal don't forget you pass port and original birth certificate, they are getting tough over at the Florida DMV. >:(

They actually require two of the following: passport/birth certificate/social security card AND two pieces of mail showing your address. FL DMV sucks. Their always packed and you can never talk to anyone over the phone  >:(

In February 2008 I walked into the DMV in Clearwater, 29399 Hwy 19 North, with the bill of sale and the title signed over to me. Took a number. Was called in less than 20 minutes. Provided my FL license as proof of residency and motorcycle certification. Showed my paperwork. Paid the bill and was out in less than 45 minutes with tag. I don’t even live in Pinellas County, I’m on the other side of the state. Everybody that I came in contact with was courteous, professional, and darn right nice.

The only thing I did was go to the  http://www.flhsmv.gov/offices/pinellas.html before I went to educate and prepare myself.

i got my bike titled in manatee county just under you and turns out my 1997 savage has a 1982 gs650 title. not whats weird is my bike has the vin matching the title to the gs650 on it but yet still has suzukis stickers saying 1997. The dmv didnt care and went ahead and gave me a title without looking at the bike, and im 19 so i have to wear a helmet and have the white and red tag but if you have insurance and are over 21 then it doesnt matter.but they did nt ask if i had insurance or antyhing. they didnt even look to see of my liscnece has motorcycle on it!

well insurance will be cheaper, but I don't think I'd bother with comprehensive.  Since the title don't match the bike, they'll weasel out of it.
