Title: Ghost cities of China
Post by Boule’tard on 12/17/10 at 09:56:54

Ghost cities in China (http://www.businessinsider.com/pictures-chinese-ghost-cities-2010-12?slop=1)

On one hand, this is amazing -- whole Chinese cities built up with modern architecture, virtually abandoned.  Almost as creepy as those pictures of Prypiat (http://villageofjoy.com/chernobyl-today-a-creepy-story-told-in-pictures/), the Ukraine city that housed 50,000 people near the Chernobyl plant.

On the other hand, when you consider the massive population of China, and the central planning aspect of it, maybe cities are to the Chinese government as apartment units are to an apt. complex manager.. and it's common to have 5% vacancy..

Anyway, I thought it was interesting.

Edit: Note the lack of scooters and motorcycles.  There should be way more than that in these areas!  :P

yes, interesting... look like some really nice buildings/houses/places too.  What were they built for and where did the people go?  I'll have to read more later.

Interesting and eerie.
I do like the fact they are going to build a bullet train from London to Beijing, that will take two days and travel at 200 MPH. I would love to ride that bugger.

Thanks for the interesting links! It amazes me that in a country with the massive and growing population that China has, not to mention the red hot economy that there would even be ONE vacant apartment, let alone whole vacant cities!!!!!

The photo expose of Chernobyl was surreal ... and totally fascinating! Have been interested in that event and area ever since the nuclear accident in 1986.
