Title: she ran perfect now she wont run at all!
Post by Ben Jones on 12/15/10 at 17:35:44

my starter went out and while i was waiting for the new one to arrive in the mail i decided to try and install my chain conversion.

well i must have not flattened out the pulley nut enough because it wouldnt budge, but something inside the motor popped, like gear slippage.....and then the new starter came and she wouldnt start.

i suspected the timing was off so i retimed it.......3 times and when spraying starting fluid right into the intake i get nothing.

its sucking in through the carb and breathing mist out of the exhaust and i have spark. i cant for the life of me figure out whats wrong, any suggestions?

When you try to start it, does it sound like its turning over real easy?
Mite wanna check compression..

It turns over like normal. I was going to test compression but it was running fine.

Give us the run down on what you've been working on since it's been running fine.

Just the chain conversion and a carb jetting kit.

spraying starter fluid into the intake didnt do anything for me so the jet kit is a moot point.

after installing the new starter i checked the timing by putting it in TDC on the compression stroke by lining up the marks on the inspection cover and looking at the index marks on the cam with the cam lobes down. . . . . did this 3 times to make sure it was correct.

And I don't know what you mean by retiming it.  unless you sloted the pickup, timing isn't set.

Did you turn the drive pulley backwards?

What year is your engine?

the drive pulley did turn backward with a pop that sounded like gear slippage. the nut didnt loosen.

No starter right?

Otherwise, take off the stator cover and check the starter ring teeth and starter mounts.

If you had the timing mark dead on and the cam as shown above, you should be good to go.  When I did mine {a long time ago} the marks weren't so dead on cause I was using the used cam chain.  So the mark was a little high on the taunt side of the chain.

Check spark
if you havent pulled the plug & at least felt of the compression with a finger in the plug hole, please do.
The 4 speed is every bit as much of a motorcycle as the 5 speed..

I would check compression, and while the plug is out, put a squirt of oil in there. You may have washed the cylinder walls with the starting fluid--I've seen it happen on car engines more than once. If that's the case, a squirt of oil re seals the rings and renews compression. Try it--it's cheaper than a new motor.....

All the guys have been giving you good advice ,I think you are having a problem taking it.
Why dont you start by getting the right manual with a pot of coffee ,sit down and read the pertinent part a couple of times.
Now take your time, amble down to your garage don't forget to whistle or sing, get yourself in a pleasant mood and try again, keep checking the manual as you go.
then call me in the morning. ;)

As someone who recommends and uses starting fluid from time to time, I would like you to read carefully: I always say to use just a squirt. I mean an on/off puff. And I spray it onto the inside wall of any airbox or intake or carburetor, not directly in the throat. Once saw an idiot keeping a four cylinder car running by non stop spraying into the carb air horn. When it wouldn't keep running on its own, he did it again! YOU CAN GET BURNED and/or ruin an engine. Be smart.  Boofer

A backfire ( a REal one) can get a fella seriously injured messin with injecting fuels manually. Gas or spray, very serious game. I use WD 40, or did, I hear theyve ditched the propane propellant..on a diesel or in desperation on a gas engine, Ill use ether.
