Title: Looking to get my First Savage
Post by Corey 77 on 12/06/10 at 20:47:12

Hey Guys,

I found a 86 Savage with 23300 miles for a asking price of $850 is there anything that I need to know about when looking at this bike.

I have been around Motorcycles since I got my first one when I turned 3 and I am very knowledgable but this would be my first savage so any help would be appreciated

Thanks Corey

Mostly the basics,... good compression, rust?...  It's due far a camchain at that mileage... and we have petcock trouble, but that's an easy $30 fix...
Good luck... ;)...

Agreed. Check the basics. If you are knowledgeble the Savage won't throw you you any curves you can't handle. It's tough as a bag full of hammers and about as simple to work on. Keep thumpin'. Lots of knowledge on here born of years of experience. We can use yours, too. Welcome.

As has been said, the Savage is a solid, basic MC. If it's in good shape, and well maintained, the price isn't bad for someone looking for a MC to ride. Remember at 24 years old, everything that isn't painted, coated or stainless and that hasn't been recently replaced is probably ready to be replaced.

If you're looking to turn it around, at that age, with that many miles, it probably isn't worth much more than the asking price in perfect condition.

Let's see a picture.
If you are the least bit mechanical, and take your time, you can fix just about anything on this bike. Get a Clymer maintenance manual. Between that manual and this site, I have been able to keep myself on the road.

it may be easier if I put the whole craigslist ad on here, read all that has been done and what you think.  I talked to him this mourning and he hasn't put a timing chain on it since he bought it in 2005 with 17000 miles. So I know that would be the first thing I would do.

Good lookin bike Corey.  One owner since new?  That's rare for that old a bike.  Appears to have taken decent care of it, at least visibly and what he says he has done to it.  Clymer's thrown in is a plus.  New tires is a definite plus!  Just replaced rear on mine, they ain't cheap!  But be careful on those first miles till the tire is good and broke in.

Offer him 550 cash, go, in person & make the offer, not over the phone.
Youve heard it run? YOu know what valves sound like when they need tweaked? Id haul some kinda listening aid, screwdriver, stethoscope, whatever, & listen to the cam chain, too,  then, explain what needs done,& make your offer. Its an Old Bike, almost 25 years old, with an odometer that says it got almost 1,000 miles a year of riding time, thats pretty close to documented neglect,,But, the pic looks good, Look around at the rubber & fork seals, hold the brake & shove to crush the forks a bit.
Look at any bushings , roll it & feel for anything odd. Look at front brake pads.. Its a decent price & it looks okay, but you could still spend more time fiddlin than riding if youre not careful. Its not the deal of the century, but its a Low cost start

The things to watch out for on a pre 90 model is the starter.
Make sure it will start on it's own with no odd noises.

They have a tendancy to break teeth off the starter clutch.
Or jamp up and break the starter mounts.

If its a good deal grab it up,bikes are hard to come by down here that cheap,I think people ride them into the ground.Lucky I don't have the money,I live about an hour away in Spring Hill and would have had that already!

haha yea I am in Ocala so it is a little further for me but not to bad, I think if I get it I know it already is going to need new cam chain and I will probably do the tenchener mod while I am at it just for safe measures so there is around 200 I am going to lowball this guy as much as possible to try to keep it low budget and cash always sweetens the deal

Looked at one in Inverness about 6 months ago,was waiting for the seller and he came pushing it down the road!real rust bucket,we jumped it and it sounded like someone shaking a coffee can full of bolts! we wanted $1200,told me he would take $800.I told him don't go any further, keep it!

Hey Corey I'm in Ocala as well, have you tried looking up near Gainesville? My savage is down till tax return time at which time I'll do some repairs and basic maintenance
maybe by then you'll have one as well, keep us updated on the search!!
