Title: Got another Savage
Post by babyhog on 12/01/10 at 08:16:02

This one happens to be a Savage rifle though.  Savage Edge 223.  I'm gonna get me a deer this weekend.  :)

I gots me one of the previous generation of the low cost Savages, the Stevens 7mm-08.   It is a fine shooting thing, should be it was reworked by one of the old school gun gun tuners to be equal to or better than Savage's best current offering.   The trigger is especially fine after the rework, clearly better trigger break action than a current Savage Accutrigger.

There is a detailed how-to rework those particular guns posted out on the net if you have any interest -- PM and I'll shoot you a link.

Savages are good rifles.
my dad's favorite varmint rifle was a Savage in .222
real tackdriver

I passed up a model 24 at a gunshow and am wishing I hadn't.

I like the uniqueness of a breakopen double barrel with a .223 over a 20 guage.  This is more of a turkey gun though.

OF, this one doesn't have the Accutrigger.  So you didn't like it?  All I read was raves about it.  Haven't gotten to shoot this one yet, hopefully it quits raining enough to sight in this evening.  I might just ask you about that info if I don't like it after shooting.  Thanks

It's hard to beat a Savage for value (both the gun and bike)  :)

A co-worker bought a Savage 30-06 from Walmart, a rifle/scope package deal for less than $250, and we could consistently hit soda cans at 100 yards with it.  I think their .223 will be that good or better.

Have fun on the deer hunt.  My sister is doing the same this season, but with a 270.

Congrats on your new acquisition BH! We've acquired a few new guns in the last couple of months. Shar bought a beautiful Smith and Wesson .357 Combat Magnum recently. What a sweet gun, and my favorite one in the house so far. We got back from the range a couple of hours ago, and she brought home a Nickel S&W Model 10-6. Her taste in revolvers is another reason why I love that woman ;)

I've got my dad's pump action 22 Savage. I think it is a model 1914 with the octagon barrel. It can still hit a soda can at 50 yards with open sites, gotta love a Savage. Luck with hunting, I do love Bambie Burgers over an open grill.

I have 2 Stayer Manlicker 30-06 sniper rifles with floating barrels and 2 triggers. Both have 9 power variable gas scopes. My 300 Savage, which was a accurate enough gun to be used as a sniper rifle in a couple of wars, acutally outshoots the Stayers.

Are those the Mosin-Nagant (or however it's spelled) that they're always having on sale?  I've thought a few times about picking one up.  Can't beat the price at $90, but never new anyone who had one to say whether it was good or not.

Stinger:  I've got an old .300 Savage lever-action I got from a friend.  Haven't gotten around to shooting it, since the open sights are removed, and I haven't gotten around to getting a good scope for it.  Ordered bigger saddlebags for the bike instead. ::)

I knew we had alot of gun lovers around here!  My hubby has several rifles, shotguns, pistols.  He showed me a quarter that he shot a hole clean through at 100 yds with a .222.  I'm learning to love them.  I inherited a revolver from my Dad when he died, so its special to me.  Always liked shooting the pistols, but never had the urge to hunt with a rifle until this year, so I hope this isn't some expensive bug I've caught!  lol

My dad had a savage pump 22. When I was8 years old he decided I should learn how to shoot it. We joined a local gun club, but I was awful. The running joke was " he's shooting again- quick- hide behind the target!". At one point Dad thought it was because the rifle was too heavy with all the bullets in it so he tried to teach me how to breach lode it- I promptly got my little finger stuck in the breach. Then he found out I needed glasses. ;D

I inherited my Dad's NYPD Service revolver. I know what you mean about it being something special. Being that it's 50 years old, and it shows, makes it more so.
Yes, you will probably buy more rifles/handguns. Buy a bigger safe ;)

A wife or girlfriend who is interested in guns as much as we are can be "more" costly. Beats the alternative, and I wouldn't have it any other way. At least I have no problems trying to decide what gifts to buy her.

Yep, and some of us are way past funny when it comes to gun stuff.   Savage Accutriggers are pretty good out of the box and people disrespect the standard Savage trigger a lot because of the Accutrigger.

But them old style gun nuts have been working triggers for DECADES now and understand how to make a bright shiny ruby out of a sow's ear.

http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=2735&highlight=stevens+7mm-08

I have guns with Accutrigger and the standard Savage trigger and have worked both -- maybe it is practice, but I can get a cleaner break and less over travel and creep out of a reworked standard Savage trigger than a reworked Accutrigger.   Accutrigger winds up with some laterial motion in it that cannot be removed safely.

Best trigger I own is a reworked Timmney on an old Swedish Mauser -- set up for target it breaks like glass.   I just wish the gun shot on par with the trigger as it is what it is, an old military rifle.

Post by babyhog on 12/02/10 at 11:59:12

I'm excited...  hubby sighted the gun in today.  Said it would drive nails!!  We swapped out the scope that came with it because it didn't give me enough eye relief.  Problem this time of year is that its almost dark by the time I get home from work, and definitely can't get to the shooting range before Saturday.  Good news is we have a lot behind where I work that goes back into the woods.  Boss man said I could go back there after work this evening.  So in a few hours, I'll actually get to shoot the darn thing!   Will let you all know what I think of it then.

:)

I have had good luck with Savage rifles both center fire and rimfire. Never shot one with the accu-trigger so can't comment on them. My Savage Mark II in 17Mach2 is deadly on them evil lil tree rats. I have to watch it, my girlfriend loves to go riding on the back of the bike and has asked me to teach her how to shoot.  :)

Title: Re: Got another Savage
Post by babyhog on 12/02/10 at 17:55:02

Well, I got to shoot a few rounds, maybe 20.  Wow!!  Ok, guys, I'm a small gal, and the only rifles I've ever shot (and ever wanted to shoot) were small .22's.  So I am by all means a very novice shooter.  But the good news is, my first shot was just a few inches right of the target.  Maybe 8".  I was excited by that.  It only got better after that.  We stayed at about 100 yards out.  Hubby put his bipods on it, which made it alot easier.  I shot from the tailgate of the truck, from a hip-high stump (bipods on top, and knelt beside it and used it as a side brace), from sitting on my arse, and from laying flat on my belly.  I was comfortable in all positions.  The gun didn't kick at all, but it is pretty loud!  The trigger was fine.  I was worried it would be real tight and I'd have to squeeze too hard, but I was comfortable with it.  I must say I was impressed with the accuracy of the gun.  I'm still not perfectly steady, but I felt really good about it.  My final grouping was about 3-4".  He said that was great for a newbie like me.
Now, if I can only get a deer to hold still long enough for me to set up on him!  LOL

Yeah, that's perfectly sufficient to blow up a few deer skulls  ;)

Please use good hearing protection and don't end up like me, with a permanent case of tinnitus. It's hell.

The Harsh Rule of the Paper Plate

Shooting off hand, like you are likely really gonna have to be shooting while hunting, shoot at a deer no further away than you can hit a paper plate every single time.

How do you find this out?   Tack up some paper plates on trees going out along your shooting lane, pick one that you can hold the cross-hairs on while standing up resting the gun on nothing.  Just you and the gun.

Plug it 3 times, then move on in series to the plates further out until you miss one of the 3 shots.  Concentrate, shoot that plate until you get a total of 5 successful times in a row.

You now know your real "upright" hunting range for a deer.   It is nowhere near what the gun can do or you can do sitting down, leaning against a tree, etc, etc.   Sometimes it is shocking to you to find it out just what your upright paper plate range really is.

My paper plate range has come swooping down since my eyes got bad and my shoulders have started to hurt -- so far in now that I am ashamed to go shooting with young people who can hold and hit at ranges 3-5 times what I can do now.

I used to be able to shoot a open sighted .357 Ruger further accurately (kill a crow type accurate) further than I can shoot an open sighted rifle now.

My scopes must have readily refocusable near and far end bells and I have to fiddle with both to get a clear sight picture for any given distance.

And I used to be a really good shot ....      :(

Bought my wife a Savage 243 a few years ago. I bore sighted it and it took 3 shots to zero it in. Its the most accurate out of the box gun I've ever bought. I bought a Savage 17HMR a couple of years ago and I havent even shot it yet. Best gun for the money ever!

Title: Re: Got another Savage
Post by stinger on 12/03/10 at 00:07:22

or you can just staple the paper plate to the deer

Title: Re: Got another Savage
Post by babyhog on 12/03/10 at 05:37:32

Thanks for all the suggestions and comments.  I really do appreciate it all.

OF, since being new to this rifle hunting stuff, I have a couple of options for hunting that won't require me to shoot off-hand just yet.  I have a couple platforms in trees with rails that I will be able to use, and a little wooden built blind with window openings where I will be able to rest the gun.  I wouldn't dream of attempting an off-hand shot at a deer yet.  That's why I snagged hubby's bipods, heck, he doesn't need them... lol  If necessary, I know I can kneel down and still make a pretty good shot too.  If the deer is running, I'll let him take it instead!   ;)

But after first of the year, I will do your little paper plate exercise, and let you know how it goes.

Midnight, we almost bought the 243.  Actually, that's what we were looking for.  But they didn't have it in stock, and I fell for the camo on this one.  I'm glad to hear such good comments about this gun out of the box.  Read several online reviews that said about the same thing.  For an inexpensive rifle (but not cheapo), I'm pleased so far.

now where did I leave my stapler?   :-/

I'm a member of the tinnitus club also. Yes, it is hell. Need to fall asleep to the TV with the timer set to kill the ringing. Penalties of my youth.

Enjoy your new Savage BH. Save those pumpkins and other fruit and veggie stuff to blow up during practice. Cheap canned soda and water jugs filled with kool-aid (or water/food dye) are fun too.

How about some gun pictures in this thread?

Mike, was that this year?  Nice buck.  What caliber?  Good looking gun.

Here's the little H&R 32 I got from my Dad.  He never shot and wasn't a big gun person.  I was amazed he even had one.  But he kept it in his nightstand drawer, just in case.  Now its in my nightstand drawer.  I know its not an expensive, or great gun, but I still love it....

Babyhog,

Thanks, yep this year's deer.  That is it so far, my son missed a big doe eariler this week.  I did not rub it in too much. ;)

The rifle is a remington 760 Gamemaster, caliber is 30-06.  According to the date code on the barrell, manufactured in March 1975.  I bought it used about 1989, put the scope on it and shot it ever since.  I am very pleased with that rifle, used it on a pile of deer over the years.  I have taken it with me rain, shine, snow or blow and it does not let me down.

I also have a colt new 32 police postive.  It was my uncle's service gun, he was a detective in the small town I live in now.  I had a guy look at it and he said it was in collector's condition.  It is a really nice looking gun and the holster looks like the day it was bought.  I am amazed that the humdity here did not get to it.

Joe, those are neat pictures, I guess you took them yourself.  Maybe I need to try my hand at some of those.  My son and I would be amused anyway.

Thanks Mike. I was shooting them for my insurance policy, so I figured I'd play a little. Made me want to get better at photographing guns. I've been looking at the photos in gun magazines, and I know I have a long way to go. I'm going to try and shoot them on marble, wood and stuff I can find around the house next time.

Thanks joe. The pics I posted were from my file of ones we took just for our records.  Should probably send them to insurance.  I took the pics without serial numbers, then copied the entire folder of pics, and added the serial numbers, models, etc, to one set with just a little text box edit.  Quick, low tech way, haha.  Have copies in a few places, both computers at home, work computer, and on disk.  Guess I need to add my new rifle.

Hunting was not good yesterday.  We sat the entire day and didn't see a single deer.  Several turkeys, squirrels and crows, but no deer.  It was about 30 degrees all day, we sat in a blind with a little Mr. Heater, so it was bearable.  It started flurrying around noon, then hard around 2:00.  By dusk we had a nice heavy coating of snow.  Very disappointed, but it was still a good day!

My dad used to ask the hunt club if they wanted him to tie up the deer for em, since they didn't always do very well in bringing them back on their own, guess he coulda kept the stpler in his pocket while he was at it.

I was out checking the fences last week and saw a buck with a pretty good size rack, might get me out in the woods after him.  I did pick up a TC muzzleloader this weekend at the gunshow, just gotta see if it shoots now! mebbe a twofer...
