Title: shutoff valve
Post by BobR on 11/23/10 at 14:55:03

Just bought 1986 LS650 and want to drain carb for winter. Clymer says "Turn the fuel shutoff valve to the OFF position." I see FUEL, PRI, ON and RES, no OFF. I have read fuel flows only in the PRI position when the engine is not running because ON and RES works with a vacuum. Could somebody confirm I can leave it in the ON position to drain the carb? Also do I take the drain screw all the way out? Thanks

Great, another clymer error.
There is no "off" setting.  "off" is automatic, engine off, petcock is off too.

To drain the tank, turn the petcock to "pri" or prime.
I would pull the line from the carb, it's easier to get it into the gas can then the bottom of the carb.

And to drain the carb, you have to remove the plug completely.

Thanks. Hard to believe I have spent hours searching the net regarding this problem which most people would have to do to do any work on the bike :)

Clymers has a couple of mistakes in it.
