Looks like those have the cross-over tube, which isn't needed on a Savage.  How would you plug the hole?

Correct, I know this muffler needs quite a bit of work to make it work nicely. Personally I say not worth the time, there are plenty of cheap muffler going by eBay that will fit with less modifications.

What size should I be looking for when I'm looking for exhaust?  How would I know it would fit?

Alot of HD muffler will fit but will require drilling the muffler support on your bike. Dyna, Screamin Eagle are 2 I know work well. BlueCollar bobbers also makes a drag pipe that fits right in.

I need to add that in some case you have to get creative to get a collar to fit.

I like BCB drag pipe, kind of looking for something similar to that as well.  I will look on Ebay a little later and see what I can find.

A little pricey but they make good stuff, heavy duty and easy to install with step by step instructions. Super Trapp is another popular muffler but cost alot.

1 3/4" inlet on the muff works
may need rtv
some have used a cut up alum can or even plummers strap as a spacer between your head pipe the the muff..

Would this work?  From the header pipe back right?  How hard is the installation?

This is from a Night Train or Softail. The guy had a pile of them from $20-40. Rear boss threads on muffler fit front of Suzuki bracket. Plus clamp to hold it on, no problem. JC Whitney heat shield. I don't like the OEM shield with small diameter muffs. Don't give over $25. Use stock clamp and wrap header with Dr Pepper can for seal. Don't listen to those who say to use Mountain Dew can. Good luck.
