Title: Coil or CDI
Post by 99savage on 11/11/10 at 05:54:59

Is there any way to rule out one or the other? Is there a way to accurately test them or should I just buy one or the other and swap them out to rule out one or the other out? Thanks

Not sure if it can be done, Clymer's manual is at home. I believe a copy is available somewhere on this site though.

coil is checked with an ohm meter
primary  1-7 ohms    o/w -  ground
secondary 10-25 k ohms   plug cap - ground

ignitor  needs a digital ignitor checker(special tool)
read dealers service dept...

hope this helps
what symptoms are present??

The symptoms go back to a previous thread that consisted of repeatedly fouling plugs almost immediately after installing them. I am in the process of checking/cleaning the carb and installing a raptor petcock. I have yet to find a problem with either one. The valves are dead on where they should be. I'm basically preparing myself for a coil and/or cdi swap.

Foul like what color? Black or white? Running too lean or too rich?

Very black but not wet or built up and it happens to a new plug in a short time (just a few hours).

are you blowing black smoke?  is your oil level going down?  can you shine a flashlight on the top of the piston  and see a lot of carbon build up?  I would check the coil with a meter.  As was mentioned before, then look to see if you have power to the coil and a good signal.  The coil is cheaper than the CDI box.  If you pull the plug, shut off the petcock and plug the spark plug back into the spark plug wire and lay it on the head and turn over the motor...do you have spark?

Not blowing black smoke, starts fine with new plug, then "fouls" quickly. I get a weak spark at that point.

I would check the wiring.  12v to the coil...check.  After all this maybe metal build up on the pick up.  sitting right beside the stator.  Push all the wires into the CDI box and make sure they are all sitting in their spots and making good contact.
