Title: Painting over chrome Post by jef.savage on 10/24/10 at 07:28:47 What's the best way to prepare a chrome exhaust pipe for high heat black paint? |
Title: Re: Painting over chrome Post by Oldfeller on 10/24/10 at 09:03:39 Fairly coarse 180 to 220 grit silicone carbide wet or dry sandpaper (sanded wet and a lot of it in a criss-cross fashion) -- you need lots of scratches for the paint to adhere well. |

What I did with mine was wire wheeled (with my bench grinder and a mini grinder) the chrome enough to see the change in material. Your removing the chrome plate layer. Then I painted with VHT silica-ceramic header paint. Do the curing according to directions and it comes out very durable. |

Title: Re: Painting over chrome Post by justin_o_guy2 on 10/24/10 at 20:35:47 Dang, Edgar, thats gonna vary, shop to shop. Id expect a whole exhaust to be pretty spendy, but if youre willing to just get a header & poke a muffler on it, then it shouldnt be too crazy. |
Title: Re: Painting over chrome Post by Lupo on 10/25/10 at 00:37:28 What you could do is have an entire pipe and silencer made of titanium and ceramic coated inside and out. Or just heat paint the stock pipe. |
